2005 FX4 hard into gear

Alrighty, so I'm having some issues with shifting here and I'm not sure what could be the issue. The problem I'm having us the truck sometimes doesn't want to go into first. No grinding or noises, just doesn't go. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes not. It's often easier if I'm rolling. In addition, she shifts perfectly smooth when the truck is off. I checked the fluid level of the master and it seems good, and no noises or grinding leads me to believe it isn't the clutch plate itself. From what I've heard it seems to be an issue with the slave cylinder which I can't diagnose myself. Any thoughts?

Hmm when it doesn't go, pump the clutch pedal a few times and hold it and try to get it to go then. Is the fluid topped off and correct fluid inside the trans?

The problem just started today and I just finished packing the truck for school so I haven't had time to really get in there. Could low tranny fluid cause the issue?

Mine is the same way. I’ve learned to put the truck in 4Th gear , then back to first gear every time I put it in first gear. I thought a new clutch would help but she’s still hard to get into first

When I had on and off symptoms like that it was the clutch master cylinder. Fortunately, it was still under warranty and Ford took care of it. Apparently, the master can get some kind of internal leak and can cause intermittent problems like that. I took it in once and they could not find a problem with it. I waited until it got very bad one time and drove it straight to the dealer and had them check it right away. That is when they diagnosed it as a bad master cylinder.
From my experience, a slave will just go bad and stay bad. That does not mean it can't be the slave or something other than the master but I think odds are in favor of the master.
