2009 Ranger Won't Start

Hi,

2009 Ranger Sport 4.0L 4x4 Manual Trans.
Having trouble getting my ranger to start. I can roll the truck and dump the clutch and the truck runs fine, no issues no lights on dash. However, turn the key and nothing, no click no crank.

I have shorted the starting motor, works fine and turns over. Shorted the solenoid on the starter, works fine and turns over. I checked the starting relay in the power distribution box, tested on bench with 12v supply and closes the circuit no problem. When I manually short the relay circuit the truck turns over and starts ok. So I've worked it down to the relay isn't closing for some reason. I've checked all the relevant fuses in the PSB and interior fuse panel, including fuse 21. I have reason to think it is NOT the ignition switch as when I turn it to Start position, the radio turns off as it would normally.

Additional information: I just replaced my rad support, and it started fine before I replaced it, and after replacement it won't start. I'm thinking I may had busted a wire somewhere during removal? Perhaps something that won't let the PCM close the starting relay? I have also checked continuity between rad support and negative terminal on battery and it is grounded. EDIT: Battery was out of the truck for a few days during replacement.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum

2009 Start diagram below

The ignition switch sends out 12v to Fuse 21(cab fuse box) when key is turned to START, can you pull out fuse 21 and test if that happens, only 1 contact for the fuse would have 12v, not sure which one

On manual trans the clutch pedal switch GROUNDS the computer in order to Ground the Starter Relay in engine fuse box, PATS does as well, but PATS is not your issue if it bump starts

Thanks for the welcome!

I've used this site for years and always have found an answer to my problem up until now.

I'll try bypassing the clutch switch tomorrow and see what happens

Thank

Checked the power to fuse 21, 12v when the key is turned. Also manually grounded the clutch switch, and still won't start

Since you can jump slots 30 and 87 in engine fuse box starter relay and starter motor comes on, then fuse 7 is OK

I would test slots 85 and 86 with test light or volt meter you can see from the cab, in START you should see light or +/-12 if starter relay is getting BOTH

If not then test each separately to battery positive and negative to see which one is missing, the ground or the 12v

Once you know what missing you can then run a new 12v wire or ground wire

Unless you get a 2009 Ranger EVTM(electrical vacuum troubleshooting manual) the actual wiring between PCM and fuse 21 in the cab will be hard to trace

Example here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2009-Ford-R...p2047675.l2557

Ford prints these and sends them out to Ford shops every year for every model, they show where every wire runs and every connector and splice location
That one 12v wire has Splice 110(S110) maybe its bad

Finally got around to looking at it again...

Wire between the starting relay and Fuse 21 was broke, ran a new wire and works perfect!

Thanks to those with the help
