Icon4 4x4 problem please help!

I've googled this, looked through this forum, i've looked everywhere and cant find the answer for the question im asking.. My 4x4 in my 95 3.0L v6 5 speed ranger wont work. when i start the truck the 4x4 high and 4x4 low lights flash about 6 times then turn off and several min later will do it again. The weird thing is it will randomly go into 4x4 lets say 2 times a month if that and i try turning the switch every single day hoping it will work. So im confused as to why it works and then wont??.. and when the 4x4 does finally engage it will go from high to low and back and forth to whatever setting i desire and back to 2wd and then after its in 2wd for a while it wont engage back into 4x4 again? I have no clue what it could be the trucks got manual locking hubs and a switch on the dash that has been replaced cause i thought maybe that was the problem. ( it could still be but i dont want to go spend 45 more dollars if its something else). Ive also replaced all the fuses that having anything to do with the 4x4 operations and nothing so please help me winters coming up and ive go a half a mile up hill drive way that can be a pain in the a** so lmk what everyones ideas are please and thank you!!

For my ranger I have to start the truck in 2wd, switch to 4x4 (low or high) put into neutral for about 30 seconds switch from neutral to reverse put the clutch slowly out then back in. After that it will finally engage into 4x4 and all is good

Sounds like your transfer case is toast. The flashing 4x4 hi & lo lights is an error code, but its old technology so if you want i'll ask around to see if anyone remembers what it means. Maybe another member will chime in.
