86 ranger fuel guage
86 ranger fuel guage
So the gas guage in my truck doesn't change when I switch to the rear tank it stays at what the front tank is, pump works would just be nice to know how much gas is in it. Any help would be appreciated.
Welcome to the forum
If it is a Factory system then the Switch for Front/Rear is what changes the Float/Sender connections
So you will need to pull the switch out to test the wires
Each tanks float/sender will have 1 wire that runs to the dash switch.
Then 1 wire out to the gas gauge
So 3 wires for gauge setup
There will also be 2 more wires, 12volt in, and 12volt out, this is to activate the valve that changes fuel line connection to tanks
Ford fuel gauges don't change unless "directed to" so when you switch to a different tank, the float/sender must have a different OHM reading or gauge won't move, its not still "connected" to the other tank, just has no connection to selected tank, so needle doesn't move
1988 and earlier Fords used this OHM scale: 73ohms EMPTY, and 10 Ohms FULL
1989 and up used 16ohms EMPTY and 158ohms FULL
I would get a OHM meter and set it for 200 OHMs then test the wires at the switch.
Key OFF
Meter connects to GROUND and then 1 of the tank sender wires, if 1/2 tank you should see about 40 ohms, 1/4 tank 60 ohms
If one of the wires has N/C, no change/no connection, then wire to that tank or sender in that tank is bad
