96 ranger high beam problem

Uhm not sure how to do this, it's my first time posting. I have a 1996 ford ranger that's been having high beam issues. The problem is when I push the lever forward the high beams won't turn on... But when I pull the lever towards me the high beams turn on. I just bought this truck and haven't had time to inspect it. the previous owner thinks it's the headlight switch going bad.

Welcome to the forum

It will be a problem in the Multi-function switch, the lever

There are only 2 wires, for high beams, on that lever, "Flash to pass" just doesn't lock into position, while High Beams On does lock, so problem is in that switch.
12volt in and 12volt out, just the 2 wires

I replace the multi-function switch and the high beams still don't work. I've also replaced the bulbs and still nothing

Well that is all there is to that setup.

Here's the wiring diagram

The main power for light switch and High Beams come from fuse 11 in engine fuse box
They each get that power separately, the dark blue/orange stripe wire that runs to Multi-function switch

Then when activated that power runs out on grey/orange wire to Fuse 33 in cab fuse panel and on to High Beam Bulbs and high beam indicator in dash, green black wire

I'm not good with wiring. I might have to take it to a shop

I'm not sure this will have anything to do with it but my lights are always on.

You mean when vehicle is running the headlights are on, DRL shouldn't matter for high beams.

If headlights won't shut off then yes that would be a problem

yes when the vehicle is running. Could the main headlight switch be the problem?? The only time the headlights shut off is while running when the park brake is set

Yes, usually with Manual trans the Parking brake OFF is what turns on DRL module
For Automatics its shifting out of Park.

Main light switch doesn't supply power to High Beams, they are separate, so you can "flash to pass"
but the power is spliced at main light switch most likely so could be a connector problem on the main light switch

Best thing to do, IMO, would be to pull the multi-switch and test connector for power when key is on
