97 Ranger is stalling and a slight burning odor

The Ranger starts right up but has problems getting into gear, takes a few second to get into drive? Also there is a burning smell that maybe coming from the exhaust area. Also it's seems to run better after it is warmed up. Any ideas? Thanks
