98 ranger xlt window issue
98 ranger xlt window issue
Basically my passenger side window will roll down but not up on my passenger side switch. The passenger side window will NOT roll down or up on my driver side master switch. But when i reverse the wires going into the window motor harness on the passenger side and push the button it will go up but not down. Replaced the master switch and the motor but nothing changed. Any suggestions? I also tested with a probe light and it lights up when i press down and up on both switches and at the window harness connections on the passenger side
Welcome to the forum
Power windows work by reversing the polarity at the DC motor's 2 wires, 12v/ground and window goes up, ground/12v and window goes down
Both motor wires are GROUNDED when the switches are in Neutral
A switch ungrounds one wire and connects it to 12v to move the window either up or down
Each side, master and passenger, has its own 12v wire, light blue/black stripe wire, with KEY ON
Passenger switch has no local Ground wire, it has TWO wires that come from the Master, both are grounds when master switch is in neutral
So passenger switch is a slave to master as far as its grounding
In a 1998 there should be a white/yellow and tan/blue wire at passenger switch, these come from master and should both test as grounds if master is connected to its wiring
The blue/black wire should have 12v with key on
The Master is grounded behind drivers side kick panel, but windows wouldn't work at all if this was the problem, same as if there was no 12volts at the switches
If this is all true then wiring at passenger door is OK
Either of the master's two wires to passenger door can be changed to 12v at the master, thats how master can roll up or down the passenger side window
And the passenger side switch has its own 12v wire so it can also roll up or down passenger side window
If passenger side didn't have its 12v the Master could still roll passenger window up and down, because it doesn't used passenger side 12v wire
If either of these two wires from master to passenger side is bad then passenger side has no ground for the motor to roll the window up or down depending on which wire is effected
Doesn't have to be the wire itself can be bad connection in the switch or connector
So with key off test the two motor wires in each door, with all switches connected, both wires at each motor should shows as Grounds, if not you will need to find out why
