My '05 Ranger 2wd XL ABS light is on & off. It will usually come on when the outside temp is 40 deg + but when temps are near freezing or below it stays off. If its on I can turn the ignition off & on quickly while driving & then it will stay off for the remainder of the drive. It will also stay on after starting when the rest of the check lights turn off but not all the time.
I replaced both front ABS sensors the rear one in the differential housing is the original one.
To complicate things the heater blower speed is low/high only. I was ready to replace the blower motor resistor but randomly the mid blower speeds will work again.
It looked like a bad ground so I cleaned up the battery to radiator support ground strap & the 3 other ground straps in the engine compartment.
We live in NYS the northern rust belt however this is a Nevada truck & the body has no rot & the frame has the usual rust for a 15 year old truck.
I think for $20 I'll replace the blower motor resistor to see if the two problems are related or not.
This has been going on for about 6 months not getting better or worse.
Any ideas what else could be going on? Mike
The blower motor speed is done by a Ground in the cab to the blower motor speed ****
Blower motor gets 12volts when turn on, the speed **** varies its Ground thru the resistor block
High speed by-passes the resistor block, direct ground from cab to blower motor
So replacing the resistor block is not a bad plan
No, no connection to 4-wheel ABS light
Unplug the connector on the ABS module and have a look at the connections for corrosion
Module is the unit in engine bay with the 5 brake lines
ABS resets with key off and on, and you usually have to get above 20mph for it to detect a fault again, or drive for a few miles, depends on what the problem is
If ABS light stays on don't try to reset it, an autoparts store might be able to read code with an ABS scan tool, uses same plug in as OBD2 reader BUT different pins in the connector are used for reading ABS , so different cable I think
Ron you were right the blower motor resistor block was bad in fact was burned out, corroded & the harness connector melted. I put a new Motorcraft resistor in & ordered a harness connector. I posted some pics. The random blower speed loss was just a coincidence the ABS problem was definitely not related. As for the ABS lite I downloaded Forscan & bought the OBDLink EX. When the ABS lite came on Forscan showed 3 codes for left & right front wheel speed sensors. Since I replaced them both 3yrs ago & replaced both rotors (tone rings came on the new rotors) I tried unplugging the harness connector to the ABS module/motor. Connections were clean & dry so I blew it out with air & plugged it back in. So far the lite has stayed out but time will tell. I'll keep u posted. Thanks again Ron!
