Bad Tach?

Bad Tach?
Someone help me here. I'm driving my 94 4 banger down the road, and the Tach drops to abot 500 RPM. Thing is, nothing changes in the engine, and I don't lose speed. When the tach drops, it kicks off the check engine light. After a while, the tack jumps back to normal and the light goes off. Anybody?
