Blower Fan Issues
Blower Fan Issues
Greetings folks. I am new to the forum and am in need of some expert insight. I have an 88 XLT with a 2.9L. the issue I am having is the blower motor stopped working. Took it to a shop and they said it was the blower motor. They changed it. It worked for a day then stopped. Took it back and they said it was the switch. I ordered one from LMC truck which was installed by the same shop. Now I have to jiggle the toggle between position 3 and 4 for it to work and then it blows on high continuously. Help!! Don't want to keep throwing money at it. Oh yeah, the shop said the resistor was fine. Thanks for any help you guys might be able to send my way.
In general blower motors are wired like this
The electric Motor gets 12volts when key is ON, but has no Ground so doesn't spin
The switch is the Ground
So the switch NEEDS a good ground
The motor speeds are set by the Resistor Pack which is the Ground side
So OFF is no Ground to motor
Low would be thru two resistors then to motor
Med would be thru just one of the two resistors
High would be no resistors, so direct Ground
If you have 4 speeds then there are Three resistors instead of two
It is a pretty simple setup really
Resistor Pack can be on/near the motor

There is 1 wire from the switch to the Resistor Pack for EACH speed, so if you have 3 speeds then there will be 3 wires.

If motor gets direct Ground it will be on High speed, so wiring matters.
Your switch could look the same but use different wiring.
You may need to re-pin it for low, med, high
Either at the switch end or Resistor pack end
