Buying a 2009 Sport 4X4
Hi, looking at buying the subject truck. Has approx 180,000 kms on it and has treated with Krown every 2 years. No apparent rust but aluminum rims are in rough shape. Looks like it has been well taken care of. Is there anything I should look for or be aware of before I go ahead. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

2009 Ranger 4x4 can only have the 4.0l SOHC engine, but can have either manual or automatic transmission
4.0l SOHC was a good reliable engine, you will need to change the 2 long chain tensioner if you get it, unless there is paper work that they have been changed before at 100k miles, you need to change these every 100k miles, approx., not at all hard to do, short afternoon project, couple of hours if that
180k miles is nothing to a manual trans, can be time for a clutch, its a M5OD-R1HD manual
180k miles on an automatic can be a roll of the dice, if it was well maintained and has a 2nd trans cooler then you could get 20-70k more miles before doing a rebuild, so certainly closer to the end than beginning for an automatic, any automatic, not a Ford thing or even Ranger thing, automatics last 200-250k miles
Its a 5R55E automatic
The 4x4 system is a separate system, just has 3 parts for control
switch on dash
4x4CM(control module), behind radio
Electric shift motor on transfer case
Only known issue were the 4x4CMs, these would fail, not 100% failure rate but above average for electronic parts
You do need to shift transfer case into 4high and 4low then back to 2WD once a month, to keep the system lubed and working, you do not have to drive it in 4high or 4low, just shift it sitting in driveway, but driving it in 4WD is fun as well, lol
1999 and up V6 Rangers used PATS(passive anti-theft system), so have transponder keys, you need to use a key that has been programmed into the PATS memory to start the engine, there is no "work around" to by-pass PATS, no matching key means no start
So try to get at least TWO "working keys" with vehicle so you have a spare, try both keys to start engine
If there is only 1 key then it can cost you as much as $250 to get a 2nd key made and added to PATS module
You can have the 1 "working key" Cloned at almost any Locksmith's location, usually under $50, so you have a spare key
