Just like the title says. Can I drive without the front half shafts or will it screw something up by doing so? Thanks..

 

um the only thing i could think of the front diff leaking fluid out of where the shafts went in

 

that or dirt able to get in there and mess with stuff. if you were to cover the holes in some way then youd be alright as long as you stay out of the dirt.

 

As long as I dont damage the seal removing them, I should be ok.

Yea I'm gonna tape the holes closed so nothing gets in.

With the PVH being a seperate assembly and only a plastic snap ring holding the axle in, I figure it wont be a problem like the live axles...

Explain... the hub is a sealed assembly, hows it going to "fall apart"

 

i don't see how it could be a prob....heard people doing it when they get a rear that has gears lower (4.56) and the front doesn't

 

I don't know what holds the bearing to the spindle on the PVH but on the live axle you take the cv axle out and your wheel will fall off.

 

you cant run without the cv shaft! you will leak all of the fluid out of the diff.
It is a pressed in bearing..it would work if the fluid wouldnt leak!

04 EDGE is right, I tried driving without cv's and got about 10 miles before my bearings blew apart, the wheel took off and i flipped the bi*ch. The only good thing that came about it, is that there is one less ford on the planet.

Reasons (obviously) are because (1. the shaft is bad and can't be driven as-is) and (2. pulling front shaft does jack schitt) you have to either pull and/or replace the shaft . In my case (blown head gasket w/sealer, tires good about another year, other stuff only good about a year or less so don't want to put ANY more $ into it that necessaray) will NOT need 4x4 so why spend so much?
I have an idea to share. IF it is bad and you know for sure (and since axle does not hold wheel on but does hold bearing together... ONE solution and easy-fix is CUT IT IN HALF WITH TORCH wihich require NO ball joint disassembly, actually very easy. Pull shat out of differential and either cut off axle spline and weld piece on end to bolt is thru hub or just buy a nut-bolt-washer combo to go thru hub to hold bearing together. Not sure how well differential likes ONE shaft-only so I'd do it to both sides. *(if plan on fixing later do NOT cut in half, spend the effort to take apart so repairable later. **buy metal caps to tap into differential axle holes where shafts were.
