Check Engine Light Wiring

Hello again, I am having two issues with my 1996 Ranger. First, I am trying to fix the check engine light. I obtained the pins on the cluster connector (pin 9, pink/green and the PCM module connector (pin 2, pink/green). I have used a jumper wire between the pin 2 and the inside of the cab. I used an ohm meter (actually I have tried 3 of them) between the jumper wire and the pin 9 of the cluster connector to check for continuety. There is none, so there is an open somewhere. I have eyeballed the wiring harness as much as I can and see no indication the wire has been cut. Is there another connector in the path of the wire or does it run directly from the PCM connector to the cluster connector? Right now the only solution I see is to splice a new wire from the PCM connector to the cluster connector.

I am waiting on your response before I do anything else with the check engine light. I still have to troubleshoot the ABS light issue and will be working on it.
Thanks.

Quickest method would be to run a new wire replacing the pink/green wire from cluster to computer

The pink/green wire is the Ground for the CEL bulb
And if the is no continuity from cluster(pin 9) to computer(pin 2) then wire is disconnected
I think the only connector on this pathway is the large 50+ wire connector on the firewall
This is 1993 but similar on 1996: https://www.therangerstation.com/for...486-png.29060/

In this image, FOR 1993, there are TWO pink/light green wires, pin 10 and pin 45, not sure which is for CEL, and 1996 may only have the one

You could pull off this connector, in engine bay, just one bolt in the center, look inside to see if any pins look damaged or corroded, and then reconnect it to see if that fixes the wire, unplugging and plugging back in any connector cleans it terminals
UNHOOK one battery cable if removing this connector, there are live wires in this large connector

I'm getting old, I made a mistake.

What I asked for concerning the CEL is correct and I will check that connector today.
I made a mistake when asking for the wiring pins for the ABS light on the cluster. I actually need the wiring pins/connector for the brake warning lamp on the cluster.
I would appreciate that information and I will give that issue a go today as well.

Here is the cluster wiring for 1996

The Brake indicator light has TWO possible grounds, the Parking brake switch and the Brake fluid level switch/sensor, if either is grounded brake light will come on

So if you ground either it will cause Brake light to come on, if key is on
There are just 2 wires on each switch, a ground and the wire to the cluster, so if you unplug either and put in a jumper to connect both wires dash brake light should come on

Check Engine Light Not Working

Well, I ran a new wire (spliced) from the ECM (pin 2) to the 10 pin cluster connector (pin 9) (spliced). Connected the battery back up and turned the ignition key to the on position. I got all indicator lights except the check engine and brake lights. I haven't troubleshot the brake light issue as the truck will not pass smog check unless the check engine light is working. SO, I ordered another cluster that has 84K on it and seller states it has been tested and functions as it is supposed to. Also have a 60 day return if it won't work.
Thanks to you guys for all you input and help. I will let you know if everything turns out good.

I would test the pin 2 wire with a 12v test light, or volt meter
Hook light or meter to battery positive, and put the other probe on pin 2 computer wire, with key on, light should come on or you will see battery volts
If not the computer is the issue

Check engine light

Hi again Ron. I just did the check with the 12v light probe. Hooked to the battery positive post and touched the pin 2 (pink/lt green) and nothing, no light. Is there anything I can do besides buying a new PCM? I just ordered a cluster that has 84K on it and the seller said everything works. I don't know if I can cancel the order or not.

Pull the PCM and have a look at the circuit board inside

If you Ground that pin 2 wire that goes to the CEL bulb in dash does it light up?
I thought you did that already and it didn't light up , so a dash issue

Ron, I got the new gauge cluster this morning and installed it. NO SOAP! I get the very same problems I had with the old cluster and PCM. No check engine light or brake warning light when key is turned on. So, at this point I am going to have to buckle down with the wiring diagrams I have and start working from point A to Z. First, I will take a 12V DC power source and follow the volts from input pin of the cluster, through the CEL and to ground. I have a hunch someone either disconnected or cut some wires somewhere that kept the check engine light from coming on when they sold the truck. Probably the same for the brake warning light, won't know until I trace it all out.
Thursday the new fuel pump will arrive and I will replace the old one. Hopefully this will take care of the fuel starvation issue.
Will keep you posted.

I would check the 12v wires on the cluster plugs to make sure all are 12v(key on), and do the same for the ground wires(although these wouldn't effect CEL)

And confirm the computer is grounding the CEL's wire(key on) at the cluster plug, the pink/green wire(or the new wire you ran)
