Does anyone know about the high pressure relief valve?

Long story short it was getting warm so i decided to turn on the ac. I got no response from the ac clutch so i investigated. I find out that i had about 10psi static pressure on the low side. Weird because last summer the ac worked all summer long without a hiccup. I went to add gas to the system to see why it had slumped to basically nothing and noticed it was spewing out refrigerant from the pressure relief valve located behind the compressor on the liquid line. I dont know if its something i did to cause this as the ac was working fine until the moment i turned it off for winter. Since it was at 10psi when i tried to start it i can only assume the relief valve was already sprung open before i added refrigerant to it today. Does anyone know if the relief valve will close back shut or is it one of those one time use things?

I did not get high side readings but ill try to take a look at it tomorrow.

Yes, unless valve is bad it will close after letting off excess pressure

You probably have clogged system from description.

Compressor makes the high pressure and heat, as the high pressure goes thru the expansion valve pressure drops rapidly and that drop in pressure is what cools the fluid in the evaporator in the cab, so it is now at lower pressure and recirculates back to compressor again.

So if your low pressure side is too low and high pressure side is too high then most likely a clog in the system.

And yes that can happen when its not in use much, in fact more likely to happen then and you find out when you need to use it more.

Ok so this afternoon I checked it again with the manifold. I was near empty again. I added about 3/4 of a 12 oz can before I could see the clutch engage. My low side pressures always dropped below 20 or enough to activate the low side cutout. My high side pressures never went above 120 or so psi when the clutch was engaged. What I did notice was that the relief valve was still hissing out gas. Not as much as when I added more refrigerant yesterday but just enough to cause me to deplete back to empty overnight. So my guess is the relief valve is faulty?
