Drivers side window

2000 ranger xlt. Drivers side window isn’t working. Passenger window works like normal.
When I hit the down on the drivers widow, the window doesn’t move however there is a click sound behind the radio. Hitting the up on the drivers window will make the window roll down about 4 inches then it stops. Using another switch gives the same results.
I have tested the motor using a battery hooked to the wires. It goes up and down normal.
the switch is getting 12v on the blue wire.
im thinking the GEM… any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum

Drivers side does have the "one touch down" setup that passenger side doesn't
And that does use an added relay in Relay Box 1 above gas pedal in the cab, but if relay is clicking then GEM and relay should be working

Power windows seem more complicated than they are, lol
When no buttons are pressed BOTH wires at any window motor should show as good GROUNDS, both wires, test for that on drivers side unplug the motor, both wires to the switch should be grounded, if not then that's the problem

What a button does, is it disconnects ONE motor wire from ground and connects it to 12volts, so window up, if it disconnects other wire from ground and to 12v then window down, it only needs to do 1 wire because the other wire is already grounded..............or should be
So as long as BOTH wires are grounds only one wire needs to change from ground to 12v for the motor to spin

Passenger door switch is connected to Master by two wires, both ground wires when not in use, so master can send 12v on either of those ground wires and passenger window goes up or down, Passenger switch also has its own 12volt wire so can do the same for that side window motor

Om touch
One of the drivers side motor wires(the Red one) is hijacked by the one touch down setup

On the Master switch there will be a Tan/light blue stripe wire, that would normally go directly to the Red wire on the motor
But instead it goes to the one touch relay as does the Red wire, and also each goes to the GEM

When you press the window down button once quickly, the GEM senses that and activates the one touch relay, and then monitors the Red wire amps, when it spikes window is down all the way and relay off
(all power window motors have a thermal breaker inside(built in), that's what stops the window when it gets to the top or bottom normally, but it instantly resets)

If you press window down button and hold it down then GEM activates relay but deactivates it when button is release, so you can stop window down 1/2 way, for example, but quick press down will roll it down the rest of the way
Kind of a neat system when it works, lol, and most Vehicles have that now
But a pain in the butt when it doesn't work

It could be your drivers side motor is now drawing too many amps, so GEM sensor is shutting relay off, or window is binding a bit in the sliders, you can spray some lube in the edge tracks and grease the center slider, Ranger windows can get cockeyed a bit, lean forward

relay box 1
It is above gas pedal area, has several relays inside with a plastic cover over it, it faces out toward the brake pedal

Standard layout here: https://www.justanswer.com/uploads/s...ing_order2.jpg

One touch lower left, this is a 5 post relay, which means it passes the GROUND to the drivers side motor(Red wire) when off, and it also passes the 12v when activated(on)

No idea on how you would test the GEM

You can cut the Tan/light blue wire a few inches from the switch, so it can be reconnected
And also cut the Red motor wire, then splice them together, by-passing the whole one touch setup
Yes, nice to have the one touch but even nicer to have a working window until one touch is fixed, lol
