Electrical Issue

My dads 06 ranger has an issue. The radio does not shut off with the key. The dome light works correctly. With the doors open and the key off you can make the radio shut off by turning the wipers on. They dont move but it shuts the radio off. I replaced the wiper motor yesterday and it made no change. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum

Unfortunately not an uncommon issue with Ford trucks that use SJB(smart junction box), it is located in the passenger side lick panel.
SJB is the Body Computer, it replaced the GEM module used on earlier Fords, in 2004

SJB runs all cab electrics, interior lights, wipers and radio are part of that.

On your year and earlier, the radio would stay on after key was shut off until drivers door was opened, also power windows and other electrics would be available, as a convenience.
"Radio stays on" usually solution is the drivers door sensor
Since the dome light works as normal it is probably not the door open sensor

Could be accessory delay relay is stuck closed, its in the SJB
Or could be SJB is failing, wiper thing might indicate that

Check for water intrusion above SJB not common but known issue

The wipers work fine with the key in the on position. It doesnt have power windows and both doors operate the dome light correctly. If i unplug the wiper motor everything goes back to working right. The old wiper motor did the same thing. I looked in the passenger side kick panel fuse block and it has a place for 2 relays but neither has a relay in it. I have pulled all of the relays under the hood one at a time and the radio doesnt shut off when any are pulled.

Looks like ford dropped accessory delay relay in early 2000's, so won't be there

Cab Fuse box is the SJB, it controls when radio shuts off

Ford dealer can probably check it, $$$
Not sure if it can be tested with OBD2 readers

I have 9.3v to the radio fuse in the sjb until the wipers are turned on. It then goes erattic. All of this is done with the key off. With the wiper motor unplugged i have no voltage to the fuse with the key turned off. With the key on i have 11.8v.

The foreign voltage is coming from the sjb with a black and light green wire that goes to the key/ ignition switch.

"RonD" Thank you very much for posting the link to the 06 wiring PDF's. !! I was looking for info to troubleshoot the phantom problem of my wipers that intermittently quit working then come back on for unknown reasons on my 08 Sport. The PDF's were exactly what I was looking for to start checking line voltages.
