Rangers used the 3.0l OHV Vulcan engine, 1991-2008
Taurus/Sables did as well, but................also used the 3.0l DOHC Duratec 1996 and up as an option
So make sure you are getting the correct 3.0l OHV Vulcan engine
The head gaskets should be changed to "Ranger" configuration if using Taurus 3.0l OHV in a Ranger

Yes, Taurus 3.0l OHV's are usually less expensive than the Range 3.0l or Mazda B3000 engines
For the Taurus you need new head bolts and head gaskets, also upper and lower intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets and new oil pan gasket, that adds to the cost
Ranger/Mazda 3.0l may need upper and lower intake gaskets depending the year of current Ranger and year of replacement engine, that's to match up fuel and sensor hook ups
And exhaust gaskets
Things you should do to either 3.0l OHV while engine is out
Replace rear main seal
Replace timing chain cover gasket and front seal, notorious for leaking coolant on 3.0ls
Coolant elbow on lower intake at the front if rust is seen
