Welcome to the forum
That's an odd one
Clearly an electrical issue not engine issue, which is good since I know very little about the 2.2l Ranger diesel system
To shut off a diesel engine you shut off the fuel flow, not sure on the 2.2l, could be electric fuel pump and/or electric injectors, or even an electric fuel valve
Older diesels use mechanical pumps and mechanical injectors(like a distributor but for fuel not spark)
This fuel flow would be turned on and off by ignition switch that's UNDER the steering column
So that is were I would start
Also check Battery Voltage first, at rest(key off)
And then check it with engine running, should be 1.5 to 2volts higher with engine running, if not alternator(charging system) is not working, so drawing any power for lights is shutting system down
I would see if you can get this book: https://www.ebay.com/itm/36053484721...Cclp%3A2499334
This is the EVTM for 1984 Ford Ranger sent out to ALL Ford dealer shops in 1983 so they could work on the new 1984 model Rangers
$17 and worth its weight in gold for someone with a 1984 Ranger or BII
It says its for 2.8l but...............these always had all engines and all options included for their model year, in this case 1984
Table of contents lists GLOW PLUGS, Gauges(diesel) and Grounds(diesel) so it should have all 2.2l Diesel electric diagrams
This book is just for the electrics and vacuum not for mechanical issues
