Also, if you're doing a modification to an electric t-case to make a "crawl box", this mod can be done in a very simplified way. I'll post on that later. It only requires 3 relays and very simple logic to make it work. You'll see when I get it drawn.

That's probably the main reason not to use an electric 1354 ro make a crawl box: the controls. It's simple enough to just move between the two end positions instead of having to worry about 4 high that you might want to consider it now.

 

Well, I made a decision with regard to adding additional controls to my truck. Dash space is at a premium, so I'm going to use the center console.

For now, I have the simplifed temporary version of my t-case controller residing there. It only allows 2HI and 4LO, but it's dead simple. Relays interrupt the operation when it gets to the end where it needs to be. It uses some diodes to decode the gray code output to control the relays. An explorer power sunroof switch controls it.

Later I'll make a sub-panel that mounts slightly recessed in there where I can mount some additional switches. I put the indicator lights in the frame of the cupholder as you can see on the left.

Crude but it works. I'll use this for the run Saturday and until I get around to making my final controller. I left all the wires on things long until I make a final version hence the wires all doubled up in the harnesses.

Thanks, Trent but I don't consider that good. Listen, to get it that way all you need is a handful of tyraps and a handful of wires, lol. Bundle wires in hand, apply tyraps!

That little terminal strip was part of a bunch of stuff my brother gave me from a place he worked that made mobile systems of various sorts. They quit using those strips and were throwing them out and he grabbed a bunch of them. I hadn't used any so far but it made a dandy place to terminate wiring easily for experimenting with this. This is basically the same thing I had in my basement to test the t-case to begin with.

I am not now, and probably won't be, interested in building this stuff for folks. I give you schematics, I do the research, but I do not like building a bunch of stuff and I end up neglecting my customers like I did on the fan controllers. I'm not tempermentally suited to mass production and if I do it for one of you, others will want it too.

Now, if you want me to post the simplified version I'm using now which is super easy to build, I'll do that too. No problem.

But I'm not making anything for anyone. I don't charge enough, I'm not motivated enough, and I will get tired of it quick. No way. No how. No mas.

If no one else takes it, I'll hold it against future need, or modify it to make a t-case protector. I don't even know what they look like on a Ranger and figure I better get one.

Anyway, I understand my tcase controler....all I do is think " hand and arm, pull lever"!...well, sometimes it gets more complicated!

As for the tcase skid, make one. I bashed Ford OEM one pretty good at only one time out, and it looks like it would be real easy to make, especially if you had acces to a heavy duty brake (which I would reckon the steel mill has). A sinlge piece of 1/4" sheet could easily be bent to a STRONG tcase skid. Add some good ribbing (like you don't get enough) as gussets and you're set!

 

Hey Griggs a brand new t-case skid is less than $30 from Ford. Don't know how well it'd do on your rig though since they're pretty thin sheet metal. lol

I haven't given that any thought. But the switch on our trucks and others are basically variable resistors with detents. That is, when you switch the switch it makes a different resistance which the PCM sees and uses to tell it what mode you're requesting.

So that would be difficult to do without significantly more sophistication. I'm trying to keep it simple and basic where I'm not dependent on an electronic system -- particularly one like the factory system which is more concerned with not causing problems then allowing you to solve them.

 

Very, very nice John. I've had a few sticky moments with my Electric Tcase ****, I'd really like to get rid of it, exploit or otherwise. Very interesting!
