F150 back up camera install - I need help
I am trying to install an F150 back up camera on my 2006 FX4. My problem is getting power to the monitor which is in the rear view mirror. The mirror wiring harness will be run from the mirror over to the driver's side A pillar to hook up with the harness from the tailgate camera. I have never done this kind of mod to my vehicle before, so I don't know where to tap in the red acc+ wire on the mirror harness.
Get your power from something like the radio switched power( should be red going into the radio) If it pulls too much juice, you may need to use the accessory power to the radio as a switch for a relay to independently power your monitor.
Thanks for the info. As I said, this is the first mod that I have done that wasn't vehicle specific and wasn't sure where to go to look for power for this. I have been taking pictures as I have gone along and hope to post the mod when I get it finished.
I'm just thinking out loud here.. but you would think when you put it in reverse, your reverse lights come on right? So tapping into the wire for those would also send power to the camera/mirror? I could be way off base, haha.
OP, does the backup camera/monitor have any sort of installation directions. How does it turn on? Is it automatic or can you press some sort of button. This will help determine whether you need to tap into something with constant power, or into the reverse lights.
Thanks to all of you for replying. The install required a connection at the reverse light to trigger the camera. The RCA cable that ran up to the cab had a wire that was attached to a wire from the mirror harness to trigger the monitor in reverse. The mirror also required a separate power and ground connection that for the LCD. I tied these connections into the radio harness and Presto! I had a working backup camera set up. A guy new to the neighborhood stopped by while I was working on this and was surprised to see a girl doing this modification.
