Ford Ranger 2008 P0171 Code And I'm confused

Ford Ranger 2008 P0171 Code And I'm confused

My truck has been acting so weird. It takes me 3 times to start her and when she does she feel like she want to turn right off I have to give it gas for it to stay on normal.. also the minute I try to turn on the A/C or Switch the switch over to plain Air she starts to convulse and turns off but if I turn the air off she's normal. I went to autozone to get the codes read and it gave me P0171 its telling me to replace fuel pump and fuel filter BUT the thing is I already replaced BOTH 2 months ago so the only thing I can think of is a faulty 02 Sensor?
wich Sensor will I need to replace? Bank one or bank 2 or both? Also I haven't been able to hear my fuel pump turn off when I turn truck on or turn on when I turn truck on. Could the faulty 02 sensor be making fuel pump not engage properly? I also have really bad MPG like bad. I filled up tank and the tank didn't even last me 5 days I was on empty after 169miles

Welcome to the forum

2008 Ranger had 3 engine options, 2.3l 4cyl, 3.0l V6 or 4.0l V6, which do you have?

P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
applies to all 3 engines
Lean code doesn't mean engine is actually running Lean, it means computer's calculation was "Lean" so it had to add more fuel than it calculated and it is just letting the driver know there was an error in the calculations

O2 sensor could cause the code but not the running issues
O2 sensors are the ONLY sensors that have a mile and time limit, 100k miles or 12 years which ever comes first, you are at 12 year mark regardless of miles

If you didn't use a Motorcraft fuel pump then the new pump could be the issue, quite common for 3rd party fuel pump to fail in the 1st year, but under warranty so free replacement, just a pain to swap it out
You need to test fuel pressure to see if its a pump issue, 55-65psi is expected when engine is running

Anyway, post your engine model and we can offer more info

Thank you! And I'm sorry I didn't post my engine type. I have 2.3 4 cylinder manual transmission. And I'm not sure what brand the fuel pump was but it's the one autozone has its cost me around 120... I also changed the fuel filter. But I do remember that before this code I had gotten a different code that did confirm 02 sensor being faulty it's just now its indicating a diffent code that says its the fuel pump. I really hope the fuel pump didn't take a dump on me because it's hard to get to lol. I really hope it is the 02 sensor. I am going to work on it tomorrow morning and I will post an update

No it's not,
There is no code for a faulty fuel pump or filter.

A fuel pump or filter could cause a P0171, but unlikely.

More likely to be a dirty MAF or vacuum leak,

I'd be checking your PCV valve and hose, a stuck open PCV valve could easily be causing the P0171, hard starting, poor running.

UPDATE 12/13/2021 Fixed SUPPOSED P0171 CODE TRUCK SHAKING AND SPUTTERING

Okay sorry I haven't updated on my situation but I just got my truck fixed after a long time trying to figure out what was wrong with it. Here are the symptoms I had along with things I thought were the issue.
1. TRUCK SPUTTERING AND STALLING
2. TRUCK SPUTTERING EVERYTIME PUT IN REVERSE (MANUEL TRANSMISSION)
3. TRUCK SPUTTERING EVERYTIME I TURN FAN SPEED **** TO 0 AND ON/OFF FAN **** TO NORMAL FAN MODE OR EVEN A/C MODE ( AUTOMATIC LOSS OF.POWER)
3. IN ORDER TO TURN TRUCK ON THE FAN **** HAD TO BE ON THE LAST SETTING AND THE ON/ OFF A/C **** HAD TO BE ON (OFF) FOR IT TO EVEN START.
4. ONCE STARTED AND LEFT ON NEUTRAL TRUCK RPM WOULD SOUND SO WEAK ALMOST LIKE IT WANTED TO DIE OUT
5. LOSS OF POWER. I immediately NOTICED THAT MY BACKLIGHTS LOOKED VERY DIMMED AS IF MY TRUCK HAD NO POWER LEFT ON BATTERY (CHECKED BATTERY AND ALTERNATIOR AND BOTH WERE FINE) MY TURN SIGNALS DIDNT LIGHT UP, ALSO MY BREAK LIGHTS WOULD NOT ENGAGE EVERYTIME ID STEP ON BREAKS.
5. MY BACK UP CAMERA WAS STUCK ON REVERSE MODE
BUT ONLY WHEN TRUCK WAS ON AND RUNNING. ONCE TURNED TRUCK OFF THE CAMERA WOULD RETURN TO NORMAL. ALSO MY BACK LIGHTS, AND BREAKLIGHTS WOULD RETURN TO NORMAL WITH FULL POWER ONCE TRUCK WAS OFF. ( THIS IS WHEN I STARTED TO SUSPECT MORE THAT I HAD AN ELECTRICAL ISSSUE MORE THEN MECHANICAL)
6. HEADLIGHTS ALL WORKED GOOD, AND FRONT TURN SIGNALS DID TOO. ONLY LOSS OF POWER ON TAIL LIGHTS.

STUFF I REPLACED THAT I THOUGHT WAS THE PROBLEM
1. FUEL PUMP (TWICE)
2. FUEL FILTER (TWICE)
3. CHECKED FOR VACUM LEAKS. (FOUND NONE)
3. CLEANED MAF
4. CLEANED IAC
5. LOOKED FOR FUEL LEAKS
6. NOTHING WORKED!

I FINALLY TOOK MY TRUCK TO A MECHANIC WHO I THOUGHT WOULD RID ME OFF ALL STRESS OF ME GOING CRAZY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WTH WAS WRONG WITH HER. LEFT HER TO THEM FOR 4 DAYS. ON FIRST DAY TNEY CALLED ME AND TOLD ME IT WAS MY FUEL PUMP THAT WAS NOT ENGAGING AND THATS WHY MY TRUCK WAS SPUTTERING BECAUSE ENGINE WAS OVER WORKING TRYING TO GET FUEL TO ENGINE. I EXPLAINED THAT I HAD REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP ALREADY 3 MONTHS PRIOR
AND TOLD THEM I HAD WARRANTY ON IT. TO NOT CHARGE ME FOR PARTS. AND THEY DID NOT LISTEN AND TOOK OFF MY BRAND NEW FUEL PUMP AND PUT A NEW ONE ON THAT THEY SAID COST THEM 300$ W.E I WAS STILL HOPEFULL THAT IT WOULD FIX MY PROBLEM AND IT SAVED ME THE TROUBLE OF DROPPING MY TANK AND DOING IT MY SELF. SO THEY CHARGED ME 690$ FOR REPLACING MY FUEL PUMP. THE 2ND DAY I GET A CALL FROM MECHANIC LETTING ME KNOW THEY REPLACED FUEL PUMP BUT THAT NOW MY TRUCK ISNT TURNING ON.
I ASKED MY SELF ( WHY IS A MECHANIC CALLING OWNER TO GO TO THE SHOP BECAUSE TRUCK WONT TURN ON?) ARENT THEY THE ONES WHO SHOULD INVESTIGATE AND TRY TO FIX THE ISSUE? ANYHOW I END UP TAKING HALF DAY OFF WORK TO GO TO SHOP AND SEE IF IT WAS THE THEFT CONTROL THAT WAS PREVENTING IT FROM TURNING ON AS IT HAPPEND TO ME WHEN I REPLACED FUEL PUMP MYSELF. I GOT TO SHOP PRESSED THE IRNETIA SWITCH ON AND I TURN THE KEY OVER AND NOTHING. THEN I REMEMBERED MY TRUCK HAS ONLY BEEN TURNING ON IF I TURN FAN ON ALL THE WAY AND TURN FAN A/C settings OFF ( I KNOW. NOT NORMAL) BUT I TRY IT ANYWAY AND BAM!!!! IT TURNS ON!!! MY A/C starts running good MY TRUCK IS NO LONGER SPUTTERING WHEN I REVERSE, MY TAILLIGHTS ALL HAVE POWER AGAIN. MY REVERSE CAMERE ISNT STUCK ON REVERSE. I CAN TURN ON MY HEATER AND AIR AND AC and my TRUCK WONT STALL. I FIGURED MY PROBLEM WAS SOLVED!! I EVEN BACKED OUT OF THEIR GARAGE WITH NO PROBLEM
WELL MY STORY DOESNT END HERE NOR DO I GO HOME A HAPPY CAMPER AT THE END OF THE DAY. MECHANIC THEN TELLS ME "OOOOOOH I SAW HOW YOU TURNED IT ON, YOU HAD TO TURN FAN ON AND TURN SETTINGS OFF FOR GER TO TURN ON. THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A CABLE MAKING A NEGATIVE CONNECTION SOMEWHERE
IM GOING TO CALL OVER ELECTRICIAN TO HAVE HIM CHECK OUT YOUR TRUCK AND MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE A BAD CONNECTIONS GOING ON) I SAID NO DONT! MY TRUCK IS WORKING FINE NOW LOOK. AND I ALSO DONT HAVE THE EXTRA MONEY TO SPEND ON AN ELECTRICIAN WHEN I DONT NEED IT. HE SAYS OK LEAVE YOUR TRUCK HERE WITH ME FOR 5 MORE HOURS IM GOING TO LEAVE HER RUNNING FOR 3 HOURS AND MAKE SURE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DOESNT COME BACK ON AND THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS WORKING CORRECTLY ILL CALL YOU AROUND 6PM TO COME PICK HER UP. I SAID OK THANK YOU! BYE!

AND HE GOES ON BY SAYING THE ELECTRICAIN WILL FIX ALL THE WIRING HARNESS, CUT MY ALARM OFF (I CAN JUST GO **** OUT MONEY TO GET A NEW ONE ANYWAY RIGHT) CUT MY STEREO OFF ( ITS NOT EVEN A HOOKED UP STEREO ITS A PIOONEER SCREEN STEREO WITH NO SUBS, NO AMP) JUST PLAIN STEREO) AND THEN RE WIRE EVERYTHING AND HE THINKS THAT SHOULD BE MY PROBLEM
AND HE WILL ONLY CHARGE 400$ TO LEAVE ME WITH NO ALARM AND NO STEREO AND TO RE WIRE EVERYTHING BACK TO STOCK. (IM LIKE NO!!!!!! I NEED MY ALARM CAUSE ITS MY WORK TRUCK) AND I NEED MY DAMB STEREO!! IVE BEEN DOING THAT FOR 2 MONTHS GUESS WHAT I STILL HAVENT FOUND MY PROBLEM THATS WHYNU BROUGHT HER HERE FOR MECHANICS TO RUN TEST AND GO AFTER THE REAL ISSUE NOT SIT HERE AND EXPERIMENT ON MY TRUCK. YOUR GONNA MESS UP MY COMPUTER A BUNCH OF OTHER THINGS THAT DONT NEED FIXING! I PAID THE 690 FOR THE FUEL PUMP AND TOOK MY TRUCK SPUTTERING AWAY LIKE I DID WHEN I FIRST TOOK HER TO THEM. ON THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY I TOOK HER TO AN ELECTRICAL AUTO SHOP THAT HAD YELP REVIEWS AND WERE REGISTERED AS A BUSSINES IN THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES. THEY SAID THEY DIDNT HAVE TIME TO FIX HER SATURDAY BUT TO LEAVE HER AND THEY WILL FIX HER UP MONDAY. MONDAY COMES I GET A CALL AT 2PM TELLING ME MY TRUCK IS RUNNING GOOD AND THEY FIXED A SHORTAGE THAT I HAD WHERE THE COMPUTER IS. AND CHARGED ME 400$ I ASKED MECHANIC IF THIS TYPE OF SHORTAGE CAN MESS UP A FUEL PUMP AND HE TELLS ME NO WAY MAN. SO THE PREVIOUS MECHANICS JUST THOUGHT IT WAS FUEL PUMO WHEN IT WASNT. I TOOK MY OLD FUEL PUMP TO AUTOZONE TO GET MY MONEY BACK BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT DIDNT WORK AND THEY TESTED IT AND IT DID WORK? SO FIRST MECHANIC ROBBED ME OF 690!! THEN TRIED TO GO AFTER THE REAL PROBLEM. WHEN ALL I HAD TO SPEND WAS 400$ I ENDED UP SPENDING OVER 1200. SORRY FOR LONG STORY BUT DONT TRUST ANY MECHANIC DO RESEARCH ON.THEM FIRST. AND IF YOUR GUT IS TELLING YOU DONT LEAVE YOUR CAR TRUCK HERE WITH THIS DUDE LISTEN!! I LEARNED THE HARD WAY. SO THERE MY PROBLEM IS SOLVED MY TRUCK IS RUNNING SMOOTH AGAIN. RPM BACK TO NORMAL, TAIL LIGHTS BACK TO NORMAL, I STILL HAVE MY ALARM, I STILL HAVE MY STEREO, MY AC WORKS LIKE NEW, SO DOES MY HEATER, MY TRUCK REVERSES WITH OUT A SINGLE SPUTTER. HOORAH!!!! THANK YALL FOR YOUR HELP!!!

That's just to hard to read with all the CAPS, so I'm not going to try.

So I don't know if you got it fixed or not.
