Clock Spring Replacement?

Clock Spring Replacement?

Today i removed my clock spring to test it and it turns out that it is in fact bad. The part number on the clock spring is f87b-14a664-bc. I cant seam to find a replacement for the part number. Any help would be great!

Also while i was picking up everything i noticed there was a wire under the dash that is grey with orange strip that is striped at the end and isnt long enough to attach to anything really. Any idea what it could be to!



My truck does not have cruise, and the wire seams to be coming from the same areas as the wires that are coming from the main harness to the clock spring plug.

If it's stripped and just hanging there, something tells me that a previous owner was testing and didn't clean up his mess. One of my Ranger's POs had this same nasty habit. Drives me nuts!

Anyway, you can find a clockspring at a junkyard. I'm assuming it's a 2001 because of your sig (might want to update your ranger info at the top right). You can take a clockspring from an explorer 95-01 and put it in. My father did this when he changed his 03's non-tilt column to a tilting column. Just be careful that it doesn't spring apart at you. They have a nasty habit of coming apart.

I'm fairly certain you can get a clockspring from just any expo, or ranger for that matter. For his 03, I believe we pulled one from a 98..... Well, the entire column assembly but you get the idea.

Swapping the entire column isn't necessary in your case, but for his, this column was tilting.


As for the stray wire, snip the copper off and wrap the end in some black tape to keep it from shorting anything out.

I would rather not buy a used one so I don't have to worry about it being bad as well.

I found this site that allowed me to type in my vin to look up parts. These two clock springs came up. Can anyone confirm that either of these will work?

It would appear that one comes with cables while the other one doesn't. Can't confirm it 100%, but I see little reason to believe it won't work.

It's a somewhat rare occasion that a clockspring goes bad. All it really is, is cable wrapped inside of a case. The chances of you getting another one that's busted are very slim. Though I understand where you're coming from.

I ended up texting a buddy of mine that's the parts manager at the local Ford dealer. He was able to look it up via my vin and said that the latest part number for my trucks clock spring is F87Z-14A664-BC. It will be here tomorrow!

I removed the clock spring yesterday to inspect it as well as test it and determined that one of the wires between the plug under the dash and the plug that attaches to the airbag was broken.

I'm thinking someone tried, key word tried, to fix it before because 2 of the 3 screws holding the steering column trim was missing, the blue little connector that goes by the ignition switch was barely attached and the broken wire under the dash.

Really would like to figure out where that wire is supposed to go. Also what's that blue little clip by the ignition switch?

On other think, what the hell is this? I found it on the floor board when i was picking everything up yesterday. The part number on it is F5VB-14A099-PA


EDIT: While searching for something else i came across this picture explaining that it is.

The blue clip is a grounding connector. In a nutshell, that clip is what allows for that irritating chime to do it's thing. With that disconnected you won't get the 'ching, ching, ching' when your key is in the ignition.

As for finding where that wire goes, I'd look around for a wire of the same color (or plug) with the other end somewhere around there. Unfortunately I don't know where it goes or what that color correlates to.

Sounds to me like someone who doesn't know what they're doing was fooling around in the truck before you got a hold of it. Glad it's in good hands now.

Something I would do, like in your spare time, is go through the fuse boxes and make sure all the proper rating fuses are there. When I got my truck I did this, and I found someone put a 30 amp fuse where a 15 was. Needless to say, that got swapped out like (snaps fingers)

That's a great idea! I'll do that when I throw a bunch of parts I ordered this week at it, hopefully this weekend. My next project is to pull the dash and change the heater core.

Then I'd like to rebuild the front end along with all other suspension bushings and a brake job before I put the cobra wheels on it.

And if you don't find it for a 2001 then try a 2000 or a 2002.

UPDATE!

I got the new clock spring and installed it and the light was still blinking code 32. It turns out that the grey and orange wire was for the airbag. I noticed that the clock spring had a grey with white wire along with the grey with orange wire on it going to the smaller of the two connections. I couldn't find this connection at all under the dash. I did find the grey and white wire though. Turns out the previous owner tried, key word tried, to fix the issue and did more harm than good. He had the grey with white wire tucked under the dash out of sight, thankfully the small connector for the clock spring was on the other end of it. The wire had been pinched and broken internally. So i cut the connector off and repaired both wires and bam all is good now. No more light!

So the clock spring not only was bad but both wires going to it was broken as well.

It should be illegal for some people to work on there own vehicles!!!
