Highbeam problems

High beams flickering on and off. Used to be only after long drives but now it’s just random. Idk what to do other than maybe ground it out or replace wires.

You should always include the year of the Ranger in questions

Its 1992

Each head light has its own ground shared by low and high on that side, so if both high beams lights flicker then its not a ground issue, assuming the low beams do not flicker

If both high beams are effected, AND the high beam indicator on the dash, then its most likely the Multi-function(turn signal stalk) switch contacts for high beam, or a wire on that switch is loose

yes the inside indicators flicker and the lows are not affected. How would I go about repairing the problem. Sorry I’m kind of noobish haha. I’m handy with mechanical things and electricity but just learning about rangers :)

Do you have DRL, are the head lights on all the time?

High beams have two contacts in the multi-function switch, Flash-to-Pass, and High Beams ON

With main light switch OFF, wiggle the multi-function switch and see if you can get High Beam indicator on the dash to light up
Then turn main light switch ON, and do the same
If indicator comes on then you should replace the multi-function switch

Remove the steering wheel covers, the clam shells
You can then see the wiring to the multi-function switch, check wires for shorts, unlikely but free to look
The high beam power goes out on a Light green/black stripe wire
Replace switch
