Need help

I have a 2000 2.5 5 speed 2wd ranger. I put a new battery on it then went and got gas. It wouldn’t start. I’m getting fuel pressure. And I’m not getting spark but when I went and hooked up a code reader that worked on the truck a month ago it says failure to link Fuse for the obd2 port is good. And ideas why it won’t read and what’s wrong with it. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum

Why the new battery?

Did you do the 50/50 test to find out No Spark, a spark tester won't work on these coil packs?

50/50 test
spay gasoline or Quick start(ether) into the intake, and crank engine
If it starts and dies, fuel system problem
If it doesn't start, spark problem.................in the 2.5l Lima engine it could also be broken timing belt

Did you swap fuse #17 or just look at it, or did you test it with ohm meter?

My old battery would die after a night of sitting. And it’s getting spark. I used starting fluid and it will start. Put a new fuel pump and a new fuel pump relay. But fuel pump isn’t getting power.

Fuel pump power path:

...................Engine bay.........................................Cab... ...............................................Gas tank
Battery------(fuse #9)-----FP relay-----------------inertia switch---------------------------------Fuel pump

Inertia switch trips and cuts power to fuel pump in an accident, there is a red button on it to reset it, its either behind glove box on firewall or behind passenger side kick panel

Small black or grey box with a button on the top
Both/either terminal on the inertia switch should show 12volts with key on BUT............only for 2 seconds, after that you would see 5-8volts, this lower voltage is from computers Monitor circuit, no amps, just volts so won't power fuel pump.

The 12volts for only 2 seconds is a safety thing, but it means FP relay and FP fuse are OK and working as they should
