Need help Identifying this wire

Hello everyone. I ran into a situation where I started seeing smoke coming out of my hood around my battery. When I popped open the hood to inspect I couldn't believe it but I found the positively charged protective plastic piece sitting on this wire. I got the battery replaced at a shop that was running a deal on battery replacements two years ago. They must have ripped the protective pieces off and "lost" one and just said "forget about it." I am not sure how it happened but it looks like the plastic piece and wire finally did enough damage to expose the wire and create smoke. Does anyone know what this wire is and is it OK to use electric tape to tape it up and drive it to a shop for repair? You better believe this shop is going to here from me. I would never allow such lazy work. Unreal. Thank you very much.

This is the compromised wire.

This is the route the wire runs towards the interior.

This is the protective plastic piece I found sitting on this wire. I cannot believe I never saw it before when cleaning my terminals.

Another picture of the compromised wire.

Can't tell from your pictures, but is your battery securely bolted down? It almost looks like the battery bounced and pinched the wire causing the short.

10% secured

Yes. It is 100% secured. I am wondering if it is an issue during the entire 20 years I've had this truck and only now saw the wire due to the positive terminal protective plastic piece falling on it. I spliced the wire and butt-ended it and taped it up. I'll take it to the shop later on. All is well, for now. Thank you for your assistance everyone. It is/was much appreciated.
