Need Help with New Interior Lights

Hey there,

I have a 2005 Ford ranger FX4 and I want to add some underglow in the footwells. The thing is, I'd like it to turn in with the overhead light in the cab, so both when the door is open OR when the dim switch on the dashboard is clicked all the way. Does anyone know how I could hook these lights into that circuit?

Welcome to the forum

Wiring diagram below

Looks like the Black/light blue stripe wire runs from the "fuse box"(passenger side kick panel) Interior light relay to the Dome light.

You would need to locate this wire and splice into it, but there will be other wires with similar color code, so test it first, it should only have 12v when dome light is on

It has a 15amp fuse so as long as you are using LED lights it should be fine, these lights would come on when dome light does

Thank you! I've been at school and being new to this sort of thing I haven't found the time to dig into it until this past day or so. I've done research and have all the materials I need (extra wire, tools etc.) And I'm ready to get going, but my only difficulty is this: there's two bundles of wire. One smaller than the other (in terms of gauge size, not by much but noticible). The larger had two wires with the blk/lt Blu color code and the bundle of smaller wires has one with that color code. I'm fairly sure that the one I want is the smaller one, but I want to test it first. Is there a way to test that wire without cutting it in two pieces? Sorry if that question is dumb, I'm just trying to be extra careful.

Yes, you can get a 12volt test light with a needle point that can pierce a wire's insulation so you can test it without cutting or stripping insulation, also good for testing connectors

You can also just use a sewing pin/needle to do the same and then use a regular Volt Meter on the sewing needle to test the pierced wire for voltage

Test lights are quick and easy when you don't need to know exact voltages, just on or off
