New alternators not charging

Hi All

2016 Ranger 3.2 Diesel

It has had 3 new alternators as all 3 are not charging

the Alternator fuse is ok - & battery voltage is present at the alternator

The connector on the alternator shows a signal voltage from the ECU to the Alternator but still no charge

Wiring diagram only shows the alternator wire(Blue/Brown) going to the ECU & no where else

Is the engine ECU the only module responsible for asking the alternator to charge?

We have another Ranger of the exact same spec that we have been making comparisons with & we notice that when we disconnect the connector from the ECU to the Alternator that is stops charging. As soon as you plug it back in it charges

but this does not occur with the car at fault

Any help or technical guidance as to how this particular alternator charges

Thanks

can you elaborate on what you mean by all grounds?

the engine is grounded and so is the alternator

having limited access to this vehicles Systems schematic I am unaware of what other grounds to check and where they are all located

would you happen to know ?

thanks

This forum is based in North America, we have never seen a 2016 Ranger, and we haven't seen a diesel powered Ranger in 35 years. anything thing we suggest is just a guess.

There should also be a ground wire/strap from the engine block to the firewall.

Ok

Thank you for your honest responses

I will check out the ground strap to/from block to firewall - Though I am pretty sure it is ok as there is a good block ground and the starter turns over nicely too

however doesn't mean that it necessarily uses that particular ground for the engine to start so I will check it anyway

any advice is good enough - I just always ask for a little bit more information with some responses so I can find the issue

I was doing some reading until early hours this morning as I am not too familiar with Rangers

And it seems that most of them have a smart alternator that gets told to charge by the engine ECU/PCM through a LIN wire to the alternator

Apparently there is a feature on FORSCAN where you can turn it into a conventional alternator - So I will give this a go and see if it allows the battery to charge normally

I will let you know what my outcome is

Thanks Again
