OD flickering light
OD flickering light
I just had automatic transmission replaced in 2006 Ford Ranger 4x4. OD light flashing no other symptoms. Told
by transmission shop needed new one. So had new installed and light still flickers. Also had shifter replaced. Now being told probably an issue with the computer. Truck runs fine! What can be the cause for
this issue. I feel as if the shop ripped me off.

OD light is the Trouble light for the transmission, if it flashes when driving it means that more than likely there will be trouble codes set in memory, transmission codes are P0700 to P0799
First thing, does the OD OFF work?
i.e. does the OD OFF light come on and stay on, and does the transmission stay in 4th gear and NOT shift to OD(5th gear)
The button on the shifter is not an on/off switch, its a momentary switch
It has a 12volt wire from a fuse, and another wire that runs to the Computer(PCM)
When you press the button it sends 12v momentarily to the PCM
If PCM had OD set as ON, then that momentary 12v tells computer to turn OD OFF and turn on the OD OFF light on the dash
If OD was OFF then that momentary 12v tells computer to turn OD ON and then turn OFF the OD light
If these 2 wires inside the steering column and shifter arm were shorting together you would see OD light flashing on and off because of this short, same as if you were pushing the button over and over
Now for the light, well in 2006 you have an HEC(hybrid electronic Cluster) this means you have a digital dash, so the lights are controlled by a small computer(micro-processor) inside the cluster
The PCM is connected to the cluster by 2 wires, its called a CAN bus data network, all the modules in the vehicle share this 2 wire network
The OD ON/OFF button still works the same, analog, sends 12v to PCM
But the PCM sends a data string to the HEC that tells it to turn on or off the OD light, so there is no direct connection between the OD light and PCM
So you may have a computer issue if there are no transmission codes, so no legitimate reason for OD light to flash
But could be an HEC issue as well, it controls the OD light
Google: Ford HEC test
There are several How-To's on running test in the HEC
