Possible transmission or electrical problem

Hi All,
I have a 2017 wildtrack 3.2 auto that's done 30,000 miles. Went to a friend's yesterday and parked up leaving keys in the ignition. A few hours later I went start it and nothing happened. Tried a couple more times then left it a while then tried again.
what I noticed this time was that when I switched the engine off the "transmission not in park" warning came on the dash. The vehicle was in Park position, however, the display on the centre of the dashboard showing gear selection was indicating "S".
So I've deduced that the vehicle thinks it isn't in park, hence, won't start.
Anyone else experienced this or any suggestions as to a probable cause or repair.
Thanks in advance for any input.
