Rack and Pinion noise

Hello All,

I have some noise from my front end that I think is most likely tire noise but in the prolonged inspection, I have found some clicking noise coming from the top of my rack and pinion where the steering shaft inserts. I recently have changed the inner tie rods and they seem to be good. I am not having any play in the wheel and it does not drift when driving. My neighbor who is a mechanic does not think it is causing my noise and it can still last for some time before I would need to replace it.

The clunking noise can be heard when you move the steering wheel back and forth with the car not running. When running no noise is present.

Should I just plan on replacing the rack and pinion before it gets worse?

Thanks,

BOB
