Ranger Electrical Questions

Hey everyone, new member to the forum. I am having trouble finding out what is causing my abs light on my 06 ranger fx4 4x4 4.0. I recently bought this truck with oversized wheels and tires on it and the abs light on. The owner told me that once he put the bigger wheels and bigger tires on the truck that the abs light came on (not sure if he's telling the truth or not). Four or five days ago I put stock size wheels and tires back on the truck and still have the abs light on the dash. I hooked my scanner up to the truck and I am getting an abs code C1414: Incorrect Module Design. This code seems pretty generic and doesn't give me much info to work with. I have figured if it was a speed sensor the code would show it. I have checked all of the fuses related to abs and they are all fine. I also have a 4x4 trouble code on which I am not sure if that is somehow related to the abs light being on....code P1804: 4 wheel drive high indicator circuit failure. I have checked all of the 4x4 fuses and all seem fine. In addition to all of this, I noticed that the speedometer was off when I bought the truck due to the bigger wheels and tires on it. Once I put the factory sized wheels and tires on it I still have a 2-4 PH difference and a RPM difference on my tachometer. I have a scanner that does live functions so which confirmed this......could anyone help point me in the right direction on either of these codes? I am mainly just trying to get the ABS light to go away, but I am not sure if it is somehow tied into the 4x4 code and the speedometer/tachometer not working properly. I have tried to find a way to reset the speedometer/tachometer, but I think I have to take it into the dealer in order to get it re-calibrated.

Thanks for the help guys

Welcome to the forum

2006 uses a digital network system for most trouble codes with computer and the Smart Junction box in passenger kick panel.

Larger tires wouldn't cause ABS issue.
C1414 just means you had a bad "handshake" from ABS module, so computer and smart junction box didn't recognize its ID, "Incorrect Module Design" just means the "handshake" wasn't correct, ABS light will stay on until you get a good "handshake".

Unhook the battery, positive cable
ABS should be up near master cylinder, unplug its connector and make sure it is clean, then plug it back in, that cleans off connections
Hook battery back up and see if it clears that C1414

Check master cylinder fluid level sensor, on reservoir, unplug it and check connection, that can set Brake Light but also ABS light.

Speed sensor on rear axle is part of ABS system, along with the two sensors on the front wheels.
Unplug each and check connectors, clean and dry

The dash is digital and you can put it in engineering mode to test it
Google: ford ranger instrument cluster engineering mode

I think 2004 and up used digital dash

Thank you for getting back with me and the great info. I've never had to unplug a large module like this before......does that white handle move in order for the module to come off the abs pump or is there some push tab that I am not seeing? I included a picture to show you what I am looking at.

As far as the other connections, the front driver wheel speed sensor connection by the driver headlight looked to have a little bit of green corrosion inside. That could be the cause. I did not have any electrical cleaner so I am going to buy some shortly.

The reservoir connector would not come off.......I did not want to break it but pulled really hard on it. It's also 30 degrees in the garage so that does not help lol. I am going to give it another go when I get some electrical cleaner.

I googled the engineering mode for ford and watch several videos. I was able to get the dials to jump to the far right and then back down to the normal position but it did not run through any of the diagnostic modes like on the videos I watched. The truck showed a number that was in the 9000s on the odometer and then after that it said "End". The people posting the videos have a reset trip button I do not have a reset trip button, I just have a single button for the mileage and then you press it once for the trip meter and hold that same button to reset it. Everything I read said that there should be a diagnostic type of mode where codes are shown, bulbs are tested, speedometer and tachometer are checked, etc.....I am going to keep looking and see. I do not see why my truck would not be able to do it

Never pulled one off, but yes it looks like you rotate the white part to unlock the connector

Ford changed the instrument cluster "test" mode every few years, not sure why but many of the things large companies do make me scratch my head.

I still have not had any luck figuring this out. I got under the instrument cluster and saw this green pin connector not connected to anything which seemed odd. It has a light blue/yellow wire going to it. Anyone have any idea what this is? If it is somehow connected to my incorrect module design code?

It is actually a two wire connector. One is green/black and the other is light blue/yellow........

Ford, and most auto makers, have 2 or 3 wiring harness's for each vehicle each year
It has to do with available Options for that model, like XL, XLT, EDGE, ect....will have different "add-ons" so buyer can customize it with options

So pretty much every wiring harness will have unused plugins.

That being said the tape on that green connector would lead me to believe something was plugged in there, another connector of the same size and taped because "hold tab" was broken??

I found this which would match those wires
ACCESSORY GRAY/YELLOW Ignition Harness << gray with yellow stripe

SECOND ACCESSORY BLACK/LT GREEN Ignition Harness << black with green stripe

So they would they would have power from ignition switch to add ??
But not ABS related
