Recycle old tranny cooler?

I'm planning on replacing my oem front mount auto tranny cooler with a larger aftermarket one. I was wondering if I could use the old one as an oil cooler. I know they make multi-purpose coolers and job-specific ones. Just wanted to see if I could use it for the oil.

Yeah I planned on cleaning the sucker in saf-t-kleen or something along that line of solvents. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something different about oil coolers i.e. tubing diameters and such.

Hello!

Personally I wouldn't use the tranny cooler for an Oil cooler. I wouldn't want to trust a couple of hose clamps for the security of my engine. Aftermarket oil coolers are much larger (pipe diameter and flow rate) than tranny coolers and usually use high quality AN fittings.

Now the tranny cooler would make a very nice power steering cooler. Just plumb it inline with the p/s return hose.

^^Good idea but I wouldn't do that unless I had a winch connected to my p/s pump.

I figured the hose/tubing diameters would be a factor. Just not too knowledgable in the cooler/radiator dept.

why not just keep the tranny cooler that you have and buy an oil cooler?

26k miles and the tranny's actin stupid. 4.0 runs like a champ.

I figure that ford aod pos can use all the help it can get.

I might just end up getting both. They're only 50-75 a piece new, for a complete kit.

if you have only 23k miles then take it back to the dealer and make them fix it.......your ranger doesn't have an AOD tranny it has the 5r55e tranny

It's out of warranty as of february, past the three year mark anyway(bought 2/03). I brought it in for service beforehand and they said they made a "note" of it in case something would happen down the road. So that's thier way of telling me they could give two *****. All they did was take it for a test drive and check the tranny dipstick."The fluid seems okay" I told them it acts stupid in certain situations. I dunno, I guess they didn't feel anything wrong when they were tooling around in my truck running thier company errands. Here's where it gets real good. The extended warranty I bought was through a third party i.e. not through ford. They happened to go bankrupt a couple months after I signed on the dotted line. This warranty is worthless, best $1400 I ever spent.

I know it's a 5r55e. It's an automatic and it has overdrive, reguardless it's still a pos.

Yeah, I would trade my left nut for one of those F250 trannies that had a 6:1 first gear! That'd be kickass in a 4x4.
