Speedo/ABS/OD - replaced the ABS Sensor
Hi! I need some help, please.
I have a 1998 Ranger - 2WD (4 cylinder C 2.5L MFI SOHC 153 CID) automatic.
Today I went to drive it, after a minute noticed it didn't want to shift out of first gear. Then noticed the speedometer wasn't moving at all. ABS light was on, and O/D was flashing. Did some searching, seems like the problem is the ABS Sensor on the rear differential. Went and got a new one, and replaced it.
Turned on the truck, ABS comes on, then goes off. O/D isn't flashing. Drive off - no speedo, doesn't want to shift out of first. Finally got it to clank its way to 2nd gear, ABS light and O/D light (flashing) come on. Right where I started. Tried to search for more information, but pretty much every solution to this set of problems is "replace the ABS Sensor."
So what else might be the problem other than the ABS Sensor? I need this truck for work, so I either need to figure this out quick or take it to a shop, which I'd rather avoid.

Does your 1998 have 4 wheel ABS or rear wheel ABS?
1998 to 2000 Rangers did use the rear axle ABS sensor for ABS directly, and SPEED signal via GEM module
Yes, automatic trans can't shift well if the computer has no Speed signal, you will also have a P0500 code, "no speed signal" at computer
The ABS system resets itself with key off and then on
With key on there is a Bulb Test for most indicator light bulbs in the dash, so ABS light should come on for bulb test then go off
If there is still a problem in the ABS system bulb will come back on AFTER you start to drive
Because the ABS light is also on(when driving) you know its the ABS rear axle sensor or its wiring
ABS module============================================ ======rear axle ABS sensor
two wires run directly from sensor to the ABS module
Each wire has a splice to GEM module for speed conversion, which is then sent out to speedo, computer and cruise(if so equipped)
Unplug rear axle ABS sensor, should be a Red/pink wire and a Green/black wire in a 1998
Test if green/black wire is a good ground, 0 ohms to frame metal
Also test red/pink wire the same way
Only 1 should be a good ground
Then test the two wires together, should be no connection or high ohms
Test new and old ABS sensor, 1.4k ohms is what you should see
If you take it to a shop this is what they will do, and then try to find the bad wire in the harness
Assuming there has been no work done under the truck recently and the wire/connector you can see look good then its most likely corrosion in a connector or a wire broke, but there are only the two wires that could be the problem

I will test the wiring, thank you. How do I tell whether it has 4 wheel ABS or just rear wheel?
Look for this in the engine bay, can't miss it: https://www.ranger-forums.com/attach...10226-1819.jpg
That's a 4WABS unit, 5 brake lines on top and right next to Master, this is also the 4WABS Module, so rear axle ABS wires run to here
If you don't see it then you have RABS(rear wheel only ABS)
If you follow the front Masters brake line down on the drivers side you will find/see the RABS Valve, 1 brake line in 1 brake line out
RABS module is in the cab, usually above gas pedal and to the center mounted on firewall, rear axle ABS wires run to here
