Starting problems

Starting problems

I've been having starting problems. First, I fixed a corroded wire from the battery terminal. Then the o2 sensor and the plug that melted from contact with the exhaust. Most recently, I replaced a dry rotted wire. After each repair, the truck started. And then after that, hours maybe days later, it wouldn't start again. The solenoid clicks, but the starter does nothing. Battery isn't really a problem as it does the same with jumper cables hooked up.

Even if I do get it started, I'm afraid that I'll get somewhere and it won't start again. No clue how many other wires might be dry rotted/rotting and ready to fail.

So, what are my options? What else could it be? Starter maybe, but I'm not sure. I may even considering redoing the wiring, though that's something I'm not looking forward to.

50k on a rebuilt 2.9L.

Did you replace the start solenoid yet ? They do wear out over time.

Not yet. Would it be clicking if it were bad? If so, can is there some way to test it?

Well, it started again. I followed that wire I had trouble with at the battery terminal back to where it connects to three other wires wrapped with a bunch of others. The connection between the 4 wires was corroded so I fixed that. Tried to start it, the starter kicked over, but the battery was low so I jumped it and it started right up. Letting it run a bit, then going to test drive a bit.

Started again this morning. This afternoon the solenoid just clicks again.

Pulled the battery, starter and solenoid. The battery and starter tested out fine at the auto parts store. So I got a new solenoid. Started right up when I got it all back in. Good thing I pulled the starter though. I loosened the bottom bolt and found the top bolt already loose. I really hope it was the solenoid. Chasing faulty grounds is really aggravating.
