My steering wheel makes this strange creaking noise occasionally whenever I turn the wheel. It happens as I'm turning it, but if i turn it and keep it turned, it doesnt make the noise. It sounds like something rubbing just slightly or something similar to that. Anyone have any idea what it is and what I can do about it?

 

use a grease gun and grease up all the fittings and hopefully that should help... check to see if they need to be replaced or what... hth..

 

Look under the dash where the steering shaft goes through the floor and spray some silicone lubricant on the rubber boot. i guarentee that will fix it.

 

The creak sounds like it's coming from behind the steering wheel, like right behind the airbag cover. Is there a way I can grease anything down there? It's not coming from down below the dash.

 

Well.....give the steering shaft boot lubrication a try the vibration of the boot can travel up the steering shaft and seem to be behind the steering wheel, 04 05 toyota camrys have that same issue, it seem to be behind the steering wheel, and if that dosent work search for the proceedure of removing the airbag online. you may have a lack of lube in the steering column. let me know what works...

 

Ohhh, hadn't thought of that! Good thinkin I will pick up some more lube when I'm at the store, go figure the can in the garage is flat out dead empty, haha. I'll keep you informed. Thanks!

 

I had this same problem and applying silicone lubricant on the steering column under the dashboard immediately fixed the issue.

 

A 10 year thread bump? Now I've seen it all. Please pay a little more attention to thread dates so the threads can stay as relevant as possible.

 

I found that kinda helpful. Did not mind it was 10 years old. Your response puzzles me sometimes, because you will tell people to search which he did, but he posted on it cause it fixed his problem which could be a good thing for all the new people new to the Ranger.

 

I wouldn't mind as much if he hadn't bumped multiple threads. One would have been sufficient. His response would pop up in a search either way. I will say that he was at least helpful with his response rather than use it to ask some stupid question that was completely irrelevant.

There are two open threads discussing this issue. I used information from both threads to diagnose and resolve this problem. I recently purchased a 2005 Ranger from a buddy of mine and I was happy to find that this forum exists and that my first issue with the vehicle was documented. I was kind of bummed out that I got a little flamed for my first post to an open thread where I felt I left a post that added some clarity and value.

 

1999 4.0 OHV anyone find a good cure for whining power steering pump? Whines when stopped and turning mostly, somewhat quiet driving down the road...Thanks :)

I have heard of some people using a bottle of rear diff friction modifier to quiet down a power steering pump. This question might be better off starting a new thread for. There may also be another thread started about it already.

Well sorry for adding fuel to this fire, but I need some help as well concerning this steering column.
I have been having the same type of creaking sound for a while now. I think I finally found at least part of problem. The that is down at the end of the rod in the engine compartment that connects to the steering column is torn. Has anyone replaced the boot or maybe the rod? I got my grease gun and put grease in the boot for now, but I am sure I need to get this fixed soon.
