Steering wheel play

Lately I’ve been having a problem diagnosing about a 1” margin of play in my steering wheel. Meaning I can move the steering wheel about an inch in either direction without the wheels actually turning. I own an automatic ‘03 4.0L 4x4 ranger.
I've already rebuilt the entire suspension system and as well as the steering rack and pinion. Yet I’m still having the problem.
aside from the lower intermediate steering shaft is there any other steering component that may cause this play? I’m hoping it’s something else because getting that intermediate steering shaft new or remanufactured is near impossible.
I will greatly appreciate anyones input.
