99 Ext Cab interior swaps and mods
99 Ext Cab interior swaps and mods
I have a 99 XLT Supercab and a 2002 Explorer to use for donor. Explorer body has severe cancer but I got my money out of it for the time I drove it. Interior in great shape, nothing torn just needs cleaned and color matches the grey currently in the Ranger. Given the needed mods, I'm very greatful to have a brother who has decades of experience as a mechanic. Here's what I'm hoping to swap between the two:
- power seats into Ranger - I know I'll need to use the Ranger tracks.
- overhead console - wiring mods needed
- Possibly remove the jump seats and build in a box for my tools. Kinda like a floor safe, maybe 2 compartments each with a lock on top
- possibly add a 12v accessory port on back wall but not sure which side. Would most likely be used for a small compressor.
- Headliner needs reattached
- Recolor interior to black or maybe dark gray. Truck is red but will eventually have it repainted
- Would love to find the rubber floor mats to fit the Ranger so I could just pull and wash them as needed.
- Add sound deadener/insulation around cab
- Pull aftermarket radio from Explorer, it has Bluetooth & USB connection

Reads like a good plan
Explorer radio may have a separate amplifier, so heads up on that, Ranger may as well, there were usually a few Audio Options on both vehicles every year
And just a heads up on explorer seats, they don't have the seat back that flips forward, but if your 1999 Ranger is a 4 door model then not a worry
4-door extended cab was an option starting in 1998, and was never a standard feature, although most XLTs did seem to have it but not all
Explorer sport, 2door model, has passenger side seat that the back does flip and seat slides forward but not on drivers side

I do have the 4 door so no worries about accessing behind my seats. My brother suggested I look into installing a fender well style tool box behind the seat so may consider that for lockable tool storage. Rex can sit on it just as well as a wood frame.
update
So finally got the interior stripped. Found a set of the canvas style Explorer seats in a JY for $25 in the gray. Got the interior cab back panels from a ext cab so I can modify that area to remove all the jump seat holes, plus I don't care for carpet going half way up the back. Going to use my old panels and cut/join between the two so I can keep my jack location. Beats hunting through a tool box.
The bad news : The jute padding is shot, it fell to pieces when trying to pick it up after pulling the carpet. So I need new floor liner. Suggestions? The carpet is good, just needs cleaned and the floor is in good shape. Gonna throw some flat black primer down for extra rust proofing before reinstalling carpet.
