can front seats be switched?
can front seats be switched?
Hello,
1992 Ford Ranger XLT with 2.9 V6. Are the front driver and front passenger side seats interchangeable with respect to the position? In other words, can the driver side seat be installed at the passenger side seat position? And can the passenger side seat be installed at the driver side seat position? I ask because my front driver seat is tearing and falling apart because it's so old. Car seats are too expensive and I would rather move the passenger side seat to the driver side because it's still in good condition.

Do you have bench or bucket seats? With bench, I don't think so because the driver's seat is wider to accommodate for the fold down arm rest console. You'd have to mod the seat and take that out to get it to fit on the passenger side, at which point you might as well just fix the upholstery.
A cheaper and easier option is probably just to get some seat covers.

The next thing to determine is whether or not you can relocate the seatbelt buckle and pretensioner to the other side of the seat. The needed mounting holes may or may not be there. I kind of doubt they would be, which will make it difficult to swap them without doing a little drilling and tapping, assuming you even have enough metal and clearance to work with in the needed location on the seat.
Honestly if I were you, I'd go find some explorer seats or search junkyards to find a set of replacements, or take it to an upholstery shop.

The seats and the floor bolt mounts are the same measurements on both sides. The seat belts and pre-tensioners would not be an issue. Those are not connected
to the seats in any way. But this could still be problematic with the seat tracks and underneath.
