Ignition actuator rod
There is just one actuator rod, usually yellow or white plastic, behind ignition key assembly
But there is also an actuator lever farther down in the steering column, its a metal part so doesn't usually break but can
The actuator rod attaches to the actuator lever and the lever attaches to the ignition switch to move it

With it all hooked up, I can start it, but not shut it off.
When I removed that metal panel, there was a pin that dropped out. About an 1/8" X 1/2" long.
Does that sound like the actuator rod, or lever that is broken?
Actuator rod looks like this: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/1A4AA...2AP/s-l500.jpg
The tooth section is behind the key slot, which has a gear, when you turn the key the gear moves the actuator rod forward or backward
The gear or rod teeth can be damaged
The pin could be from end of the actuator rod
Google: Ford Ranger replace actuator rod
Should be several videos that shows how it all works, same setup was used in most Ford cars and trucks

I ordered the rod on Saturday, from Rockauto, so hopefully will the the part that broke. Old 27 year old plastic.
I'm not sure if I want to try digging into it, or let my mechanic.
I wonder how long of a piece of pvc pipe they used?
I'm trying to get all the tools lined up before I start.
I just loosen the bolts on the side of the column, and it slides off?
I'm not sure how they remove that tilt spring?
