Another post about a bad gauge cluster

Hey guys,

Been googling around a bit and seen some other forum posts about this but things still aren't totally clear for me.

My gauge cluster is going out. It started with the tach, going in and out as I hit bumps or love tapped the top of the dash with my hand. I pulled it and cleaned connections. But I noticed the printed "circuit board" on the back is nicely warped and crunchy. So I'm looking for a new one. Oh and now all the backlighting on the left side quit at once making it hard to use at night.

I've got a 99 with the 4.0 OHV, 5 speed, and electronic 4x4. I see lots of ebay clusters with the tach, but I cant find any way to tell of they have the 4x4 indicators. Do all gauge clusters secretly have the 4x4 lights or do I need to specifically find one that does? Cant see them if they aren't lit.

My parking brake light also keeps turn off and on randomly too. I already changed the switch at the pedal to no avail. Not sure if a symptom of same issue.

Thanks guys!

Given this is 3 weeks old I'm guessing nobody in this forum has an answer ready? Would anyone be willing to shine a flashlight at their dash and see if the 4 high and 4 low indicators exist on a non-4x4 ranger?

Sorry missed this first time around

Yes, 1996-2003 Ranger clusters are interchangeable and all have the 4WD light indicators
Only real difference is the Auto P R N D 2 1 at the bottom which manual cluster won't have, and of course tach or no tach

The tach ground wires on the cluster wiring are different between 4cyl and V6 but easy enough to change if you end up with a 4cyl cluster

Yes, the Red brake light coming on and off can be the e-brake pedal switch OR the master cylinder fluid level switch, pull off its connector and clean connection, it gets corroded inside

Thanks for the informative reply. I had topped off my brake fluid the other day and wondered why my parking brake light was behaving the last few days. It was only a bit low, from the brakes wearing in I'm sure. Guess that explains that.

I noticed on my cluster (for manual) theres what looks to be a patched area where the auto gear selector is. I'm assuming this can be swapped over to an auto cluster?

Yes, as far as I know the P R N D 2 1 can be replaced with the black panel from your original cluster
