thread size for billet shift knob?
Buy a Hurst! A little noisy but I love it! Anyway sorry for that..
When I bought a new shift **** it had 3 allen head screws that you screwed in and pressed againts the shifter arm. It was not threaded and worked out well.
Here are some pics... I wish I could find the **** now and show you how it worked ecactly...
See the lower section of the ****? Well when you unscrew that sections down it reveals where the allen head screws are. All you did was put the bottom section on first, then the top, screwed the allen head screws in, and then screw the bottom section back up over the allen head screws. Hopefully that is understandable.
I will try and update if I can find it, hope this helps a little man.

A 2004 FX4 Level II chrome shift lever and boot are direct replacements and the lever is threaded. Costs almost as much as a Hurst, though - not including the $60 factory ****!

Not a good pic of the FX shifter. They need to work that boot cover a bit.
Here's mine:

And yes, the new shift ***** are glued and pressed on. They are a pain to remove, and the shaft has splines not threads. Plus, the shift boot is about the ugliest thing Ford could make.
Aww Shizits, my site won't alow pic posting, and CarDomain seem to be blocking it as well. The heck with that, here's a link

thanks guys that helps a lot. not sure what i'll do. i might just sand down the factory one and repaint it red, cuz most of the interior is going to get that treatment and it might look sweet. if not i'll buy a new one....

Ewe!! I didn't look that close at the photo when I first saw it and didn't notice the cup holders or missing faux aluminum ring. Wow, they really did there best to ruin that nice sexy shifter after '03, didn't they?!

The aluminum finish base, even if it is yet more plastic, adds quite a bit to the look. I never looked that closely at the '04+'s, I just figured they'd manufactured a new ring that didn't have the cutout for the manual t-case lever..

I have an 02 and it has the shinny shifter ***** and boot covers like the one mentioned above. Any idea how to take the boot covers off so I can get to the top of the transmission to take the shifter off so I can pull the transmission to change the leaky slave cylinder and the clutch while I'm at it.$$$$$$
