2004 Red Danger Ranger
2004 Red Danger Ranger
Hello Everybody,
It's been a long time coming, but I finally got myself the little truck I needed!
Recently acquired a 2004 Ranger XL, and drove it cross country from Chicago to Seattle.
Now what better way to get to know the car (after a 30 hour drive) then to go to the forums and find out how to fix 'er up!
Any advice you may have is greatly welcomed, Thanks ahead of time!

Welcome to the forum
2004 was the first year for HEC(digital dash) and SJB(body computer), its behind fuse box in passenger kick panel
You could have a 2.3l 4cyl engine, or a 3.0l or 4.0l V6 in a 2004
And manual or automatic
You can get your owners manual here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
Good to have it in PDF format, easier to search, lol
You have PATS(passive anti-theft system), which requires you to use a transponder key in the ignition
Each key has a unique code inside it, and 3 of these keys were programmed in at the factory, so only those 3 keys could start the engine
A locksmith can cut and ADD more transponder keys using a laptop computer
Or a locksmith can cut and then CLONE a Working Key without vehicle present, the working keys unique number is read and then transferred to blank transponder key, so anti-theft system see these two keys as the same key because they have the same number inside
These keys require no batteries they use RFID
But in any case make sure you have a SPARE KEY it can get expensive to get a mobile locksmith to come to the vehicle to program a new key
There is no by-pass for it, no temporary relief, lol, its a very good anti-theft device, so no key = tow truck or mobile locksmith

Thanks for all of that great information!
Definitely good to know about the keys. I'll make sure to keep those safe.
And the old owner busted up the driver side lock, so it adds a little piece of mind to know that nobody can walk away with more than my wet wipes in the glove box.
