Icon5 engine I.D. ?

I just bought a 1989 Ranger. Yesterday at Auto Zone they told me the 4.0 was not a option offered in the 89 Ranger. Under the hood, there is a sticker on the truck, not engine, referencing the Catalyst 4.0 L -OHM, and Spark plug AWSF-42c. Distibutor # 90TF-12029-A1A, Valve cover sticker # 1G945AA, and the intake flange # 90TF-AB.
Was a 4.0 engine installed in this 1989 4x4 ex cab Ranger or has it been swapted out? Is there any engine I.D. on the block, or what ? Any suggestions are kindly accepted, Thanks, Tim

Rangers got 4.0l OHV engine in 1990
4.0l never came with a distributor, it was only offered distributorless with fuel injection.

4.0l looks like this: The Ford Ranger 4.0L Engine - The Ranger Station
3.0l looks like this: The Ford Ranger 3.0L Vulcan V-6
3.0l had a distributor until 1995
2.9l looks like this: Ford Ranger/Bronco II 2.9 liter Engines

Also get your VIN and go here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...VIN_Codes.html
8th digit in VIN is engine ID
