Hi from Eugene, ORYGUN.

My name is JohnEd and i live ion the GREAT North West. It is nice up here and we get fewer rain days than my native Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

About my 1996 truck. 1) I love my truck. 2) 4.0 OHV 3) 4X4 4) stick 5) STS

Issues: 1) Low power 2) poor mpg 3) Choppy ride

Pluses: 1) It is a Ford 2) It is very comfy 3) AC works great 4) She is very BLACK and stealthy looking. I love my truck.

I have many questions and i will post them.

Thanks,

John

Welcome to the forum

I lived in Eugene for 11 years, went to U of O, not in school the whole 11 years, lol.

Great place
I came up from Southern Calif to go to university there, I remember I arrived in August and it was beautiful weather, and so GREEN.
Southern Cal. has two seasons, Brown and Light Brown

In September it started to Rain, and it stopped raining around April/May, pretty much every year I lived there, lol

They did "Hours of Sun" for each winter month, HOURS OF SUN!, had never heard of that before, lol, SMOG index, sig alerts, yes, but not "hours of sunlight"
Like "we had 20 hours of sun in December", meaning in 31 DAYS the sky was clear enough to actually see the sun for 20 HOURS...........TOTAL in 31 DAYS.

Anyway 1996 4.0l OHV Ranger with manual trans, GOOD vehicle

Check Fuel pressure regulator(FPR) on engine, passenger side top front, look for the Return fuel line that connects to the FPR
It will also have a Vacuum hose attached to it, remove this hose and see if there is gasoline in it
If FPR leaks, raw fuel is sucked into the engine by this vacuum hose, lowering power, MPG and makes idle rough
Replace FPR if hose has gas in it

And clean the MAF sensor, every two years at least.
Google: ranger throttle cable mod
Lack of full throttle makes engine seem less powerful

Look on drivers door sticker
It will have stock tire size
If someone put on taller tires then speedo and ODOMETER will be off, so your MPG calculations will also be off

Drivers door sticker will also have your axle info, look here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...le_codes.shtml

Most 4.0l 4x4 Rangers have Limited Slip(L/S) rear axles, GM calls theirs "posi-traction", Fords calls it Trac Lok, same thing, limited slip means both wheels get equal power, OPEN is what most vehicles have, only 1 wheel gets power, the EASIEST wheel to turns gets the power, which is why they get stuck easily

Thank you Ron. I will check the FPR in just a few minutes.

As I recall there is a spray fluid for cleaning the MAF sensor. I'll get some today.

I just recently developed a "miss". It is noticeable as a vibration and lack of power when running down the road and the engine lopes at idle. Clearly a dead jug. I bought new wires and i got some NGK plugs. Are the plug brand a mistake?

Looking to do other small DIY mods like air cleaner alts. I will do the fuel filter as well just on principle.

Thanks again

Yes, you need a non-residue spray cleaner, electronic parts cleaner
MAF sensor cleaner is just that, you could save a couple of bucks buying generic electronics cleaner but auto parts store won't have that, and extra trip to an electronics supply place isn't worth it IMO.

4.0l tends to eat spark plugs, Motorcraft and Autolite seem to last the longest, in that order, NGK are fine to use
Only use regular copper, or nickle, plugs, OR Double Platinum(iridium), single platinum would be a waste of money because 3 of the spark plugs would wear out the same as regular plugs
Because of Ford's Waste Spark system

Gap plugs at 0.054, thats spec, big gap

Watch out for the firing order on the Coil Pack when changing wires
3 4
2 6
1 5
Front

The 1 2 3 side is easy
The 5 6 4 side is what people mess up, I still do, and would SWEAR I didn't mess it up, lol

Get a can of Seafoam or other similar fuel system cleaner, dump it in the gas tank at next fill up.
I do this once a year on all my fuel injected vehicles, really smooths out the 4.0ls idle about 1/2 tank in, could probably do it every 6 months but then I wouldn't notice the smoother idle and would figure I had wasted my money, lol.

Just FYI, stop by local Ford Dealer and ask if they have an email for upcoming parts sales, they almost always do, sign up for it
They will have sales on Motorcraft and other Ford parts for LESS than cheapest knock off brand at local parts stores.
Ford dealer parts are EXPENSIVE, unless they are doing a sale then there are good deals to be had, $80 for spark plug wires!!!WTF, then on sale for $20 a week later

And a "heads" up
4.0l OHV engine can NEVER be overheated, it WILL crack a head, weak spot in the casting
At the first sign of rising temp PULL OVER
See if you can find the cause, i.e. coolant leak or ???

Wait for it to cool off then you can drive a bit more until temp gets up to 1/2 then PULL OVER again
Even DIY head swap will run you $600 minimum
If it takes you 6 hours to get home you were making $100 an hour, for your trouble, especially for a $5 hose issue

DO NOT OVERHEAT THIS ENGINE!!!!!

My lucky day when we met. I cracked my Cressida head when I blew a hose on the freeway just at an off ramp. Decided to run her to the end of the off ramp to clear the freeway. was only 50 yards but that is what took the head. I had not a clue that the 4.0 was that sensitive. funny thing is that I lost the serpentine at 70 and while I was pondering WTF I started to smell hot glycol. Memories of the Cressida flashed and I hit the side of the freeway coasting with the engine off. Temp was pegged but I thought the needle was actually just at the highest "HOT" mark. saved her!

Getting old and slow so I will have a mech replace the plugs. I know, i am turning into a pansy at 75. I did pull the all-power drivers seat and get it back in so I ain't done yet.
