Need help
Welcome Jaybird.
Sorry you haven't gotten an answer sooner. You can look for a used one to buy online. Most of those sites ask what veihicle you have and match you with parts. Same thing with local parts stores. Rockauto can get you a new one. They will have a list of every part for your truck. I hope I have helped.

Welcome to the forum
You have a Toyo Kogyo transmission in an 1984, TK5 if its a 5-speed, there was also a TK4 used in Rangers, a 4-speed
It wasn't an awful transmission but wasn't the greatest either
Easiest thing would be to find a working TK5 or rebuild yours
The TK5 used detachable bellhousing so you could use any TK5 from any engine as long as it was from a 4x4, you just need to swap your bellhousing over
All the Ranger TK5's used same gear ratios: 3.96 / 2.07 / 1.39 / 1.00 / 0.84
For an upgrade
The 2.8l engine uses the same transmission bolt pattern as the 2.9l and 4.0l Ranger engines
In 1990 the 4.0l Ranger came out with the newer M5OD-R1 4x4 manual 5-speed transmission
M5OD-R1 is a good reliable transmission used until end of the Ranger line in 2012
Often abbreviated as an M5R1 transmission
You could use any M5OD-R1 from 1990 to 2012 4.0l 4x4 Ranger with your 1984 2.8l Ranger.
MUST BE from a 4x4 and must be from 4.0l engine as bellhousing does not detach on the M5R1
You will use 4.0l clutch and slave, and 1990-1995 4.0l Flywheel 1997 used different flywheel
Also 4.0l starter motor for manual trans
M5OD-R1 is not the same length as TK5 so drivelines will need to be changed, 1990-1992 4.0l 4x4 should match up
Also you will need to cut the floor plate a bit to fit the M5OD-R1 shifter
Alot of busy work, lol.
