just bought a 1990 xlt v6 4.0
still got some of the original paint
had to do some work, but she runs good
I've never had a truck before, this is all a little new to me, dove in head first, but haven't had too much trouble

First year for the 4.0l OHV engine in Rangers, was used from 1990-2000 then replaced by the 4.0l SOHC in 2001-2011
4.0l OHV is a good reliable engine with decent power
NEVER allow the 4.0l OHV to over heat, it will crack the heads, pull over and let it cool down, do not try to "make it home"

Manual trans will be a M5OD-R1(M5R1), uses ATF not gear oil, yes automatic transmission fluid in a manual trans, Mercon V
Automatic will be an A4LD, make sure to service it, fluid and filter

1990 will have an EEC-IV computer and uses OBD1 trouble codes, these can be retrieved using the CEL(check engine light) and counting the flashes

 

thanks, it's an automatic. and judging by the state of the motor oil, it could use a change too
