Hi all,
my name is Marcus, I recently bought my first truck, which is a 1996 ford ranger, 3.0L v6 2wd
. 104,000 miles on it, paid $750 dollars for it. Runs like a charm. Spent most of her winters inside luckily, so she doesnt have your typical ohio rust. Only has a few spots near the tailgate that I want to take care of sooner rather than later.
I have never joined a forum before, been kinda nervous to fo so. My previous vehicle was a 95 grand marquis 4.6 v8 that I drove for about 4 or 5 years. Love that car but I just got tired of putting money I to her. Now I'm a truck guy, haha.
Anyway, I joined this group in Hope's of learning more about 96 rangers, especially the 3.0. I want to learn how to improve it. I know there are different things to do in order to gain more power and fuel efficiency and speed, but I'd like to learn what those things are.
So sorry for the long post, I just didn't know what all to say.im excited to join this community and hope to learn a lot about the ranger and make some new friends!
1996 Ranger was Generation 2, 1993-1997, but same size as gen 3 1998-2011, so many parts are swap-able
1995 was when Rangers got the new OBD2 computers, so you can use regular code reader on yours
3.0l Vulcan engine was very reliable, 1986 to 2008, Rangers used them 1991 to 2008
It is designed as a HIGH RPM engine, so you need to keep the RPMs UP, it makes best torque/power at 3,500rpm, most engines do that at 2,500rpms, so don't drive it like a "regular engine" or you will be disappointed, it has the nick name "3.slow" because of this
If you have a manual trans it makes it much easier to drive it at the higher RPMs, manual trans would be M5OD-R1 model
Automatic would be the 4R44E model
Hi Ron,
thanks for the reply! It's good to know that the 96 is interchangeable with other years. It is the automatic version, and thanks for the info on high rpm, that's good to know. I have access to an obd 2 scanner so that is good to know also. Thanks again!
