New old guy

Guess i should have done this first...hey I'm old....joined to try and find help in a 4.0 sohc conversion into a 1999 xlt 4x4 flairside ranger that was originally a 3.0...wiring is hurting the project...another forum they said it was plug n play....well it isn't...lol...

I'm an old motor head..cut my teeth on pontiacs n chevies...with a few big block mopars here inn there...I've owned a couple of Ford's but 1962 models....and 1 4x41989 ranger 5 speed..but it's all different with the new ranger...master mechanic on old cars...work daily o.k. semis n trailers...so it's not the wrenching, it's the lack of info i can find...hopefully it's to be found here...also i'm open to older off topic questions or whatever...hotrods and 4x4's are also things I'm good at...hope to meet members and with some luck get my ranger project up...
Thanks

Welcome to the forum, I too am an "old guy", lol.

Not a good choice of engine swaps, won't be much in the way of wiring help from any "been there done that" perspectives
And you can just go out and buy a 4.0l SOHC Ranger

1999 Ranger isn't full digital yet so thats good.
The computer and engine wiring harness from the 2001 will need to be complete and installed into the Ranger, and if automatic you need that harness as well as the 2001 transmission.

Not sure if 2001 Explorer had Smart Junction Box(SJB), replaced GEM, which would add another wrinkle to the project, but if it had a regular cab fuse box then that would make things easier.
2001 4.0l SOHC for sure needs timing chains, tensioners and cassettes changed to the newer versions, for sure

If its not to late I would look at selling the 4.0l SOHC, trans, computer and wiring
Then use that money to get 302(5.0l) V8 and trans, with either computer and wiring harness or Carb and distributor setup.
Many, many swaps of V8s into Rangers have been done, so loads of wiring or other installation tips out there
And there never was a stock V8 Ranger, so while not one of a kind it won't be common, lol, like the 4.0l SOHC Rangers
