Newb.....
Newb.....
Hi folks! I'm Jamie. I'm an old fart. Considering buying a used Ranger. Want to learn about years and options, reliability and maintenance issues, best years, etc. Hoping to gain some insight here to help me make a good choice.
Welcome to the forum
2001-2004 with the 4.0l SOHC V6 engines had timing chain tensioner issues, not hard to put in 2 new tensioners but has to be done BEFORE they are rattling, lol
And these 2 tensioner should be replaced every 100k miles in any year
2004 to 2006 3.0l have recessed Valve seat issues, have to replace the heads
The 4cyl Ranger engines were good in any year, the 2004-2011 were better years for the 2.3l Duratec, no IMRC or heated thermostat
Manual transmissions were never an issue in Rangers of any year
Automatics..........well its an automatic, lol, so while the Rangers had good automatics, same design used for 26 years, if its not serviced then it will breakdown, but needs a rebuild regardless at 250-300k miles
Check frame and rear leaf springs for rust, same for any pickup

Thanks! Thats good info. What about the earlier years? My PLAN, and we know how plans go sometimes, is to find the newest, lowest mileage I can find with a reasonable distance, in my budget. But, I'm also not opposed to older if its in great shape
Have a read here: https://www.therangerstation.com/for...-buyers-guide/
I was a "low-mile" guy when I was younger, then after buying a few I became a "reasonable-mile" guy, lol
Low-mile vehicles should have super clean interiors, which is good but every seal and gasket in the engine/trans, will leak, and all the bushings and seals in chassis will be failing
But other than that it "looks good"
So heads up, low-miler in "classic cars/trucks" that you NEVER intend to drive are usually good value/investment
Rangers are not that
If you intend on driving the vehicle then reasonable miles is better, in my opinion

For a 3rd Gen, what would be "reasonable miles" for an automatic tranny vs a manual tranny do you think? And how about the 3.0L V6 vs the 2.3L 4...? I live in a town that all four city limit signs are on one post. The big
"road trip" once, maybe twice a month is 35 miles away for grocery shopping.. Other than that, its a mile here and a mile there...local store, gym, church, etc. So, for my search, I want to nail down a year range, mileage range, and engine/tranny combination that has the best chance of reliability and lowest cost of repairs. I do tend to take very good care of my bikes, so I imagine it would be no diff with a Ranger....but did the prior owner?..I would prefer an automatic, but am not opposed to a manual if the auto is a shaky preposition (oh, the reason I am totally dumb about all this is that the last car I owned was a 1966 Galaxie, bought it new, and I had it for 18 years and haven't owned a car since....4 wheels is a whole new world for me now..)

Manual trans only for reliablity
Only automatic that has ever been "reliable" hasn't been invented yet
4.0l or 4cyl, I would pass on the 3.0l, its reliable but poor MPG and power, double whammy
Reasonable miles is 500/month 6,000 a year, but you never know if a vehicle broke down and sat for 10 years before it was repaired, lol

I like my 3.0 gas mileage is 20mpg. Decent for a 4x4, and it's the most dependable vehicle I've ever had. Bought it new in 2006. Decided to invest into it and reseal the motor. Personally I'd have a 3.0 before a 4.0. They're built better. One look at the timing components is one example why I say that.
