Torque Converter
My son was driving his 93 ranger splash last night home from school and the car just died and won't shift into gear. The truck starts fine and idles fine, but as soon as you go to shift it into gear the truck dies immediately. I asked a couple of friends what it could be and they said that it could be either the fuel pump or the torque converter is locked and that it whats not allowing the truck to shift into gear. Any help would be appreciated as we have only had the truck for 2 weeks and have had no issues whatsoever with it. Thanks

Assume an automatic trans. in your 1993
What engine?
You have an A4LD transmission in either case, and it does have a TCC(torque converter lock up) solenoid.
On the drivers side of trans there will be a 3 wire connector just above the pan
A4LD has 2 solenoids inside, TCC, and 3/4 shift(OverDrive)
Both get 12volts when key is on, thru 1 wire in the 3 wire connector, center wire is the 12v wire
The other 2 wires are Grounds the computer uses to Activate each solenoid separately
Unplug that 3 wire connector
Start engine and see if it still stalls in gear
If not then either the TCC Ground wire is shorted to Ground somewhere or Computer is Grounding that wire
If engine still stalls then problem could be shorted wire inside the transmission, or a stuck valve.
Solenoids and wiring can be accessed by removing the pan, and they can be changed as well.
You can also use an OHM meter on Truck wiring and Transmission wiring to see if there is a short to ground
If torque converter itself was the issue then trans fluid would smell burnt and be a dark color
Not sure where fuel pump issue would be part of this symptom?
It is possible that the shifter itself is hitting wires and cutting power to systems, do the lights or gauges go off when engine stalls?

You could also jack up the rear wheels
BLOCK THE FRONT WHEELS!!!!!!
And see if trans is actually locked up, if rear wheels spin, in gear, then trans is most likely OK, "most likely"
If engine still stalls then trans is locked up and will need to come out
